The best way is via TFTP. This can be done with the command "copy running-config tftp://a.b.c.d/backup" where a.b.c.d is your TFTP server(and backup can be any name you wish).
Additionally, as the config file is plain text, you can just type "show running-config" and then copy that to a notepad. Depending on your terminal, you may have to clean the text up somewhat.
In either case, it's a good idea to copy the config to the flash memory, just in case there's a sudden power loss. This can be done with "copy running-config startup-config"
Is there a way to initiate the backup and tftp remotely, from a workstation or server in my computer room? I have several Dell PConnect switches, and would like to run a job monthly to backup all my configs to an ftp server. If I have an ftp server running, do I need to setup a tftp server too?
