Internet Connection Issue when connected hard wired.

I did reset when ever i switched from one network to another. 

Note that if you are changing the connection to modem between a computer and a router, you need to do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change. To do this, shut everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first, and wait another 5 minutes. Then turn on the device that is connected directly to the modem (either the router or the computer), then turn on any other computers that will connect through the router.

Hi,

 

Do I have to install chip set drivers. Please let me know. I have not installed chipset driver assuming  Dell recovery CD will install those driver.

 

I am asking this as I was going through forum and found same problem with other guys. You suggested them to install chipset driver.

If the ethernet connection works when you are plugged into the router, then you must have the chipset driver installed as the ethernet card driver would not work.  So, I can't see how that would be the cause of the problem. 

 

Is your internet servicer dsl or cable.  If it is dsl, are you configuing the connection so that Windows handles the PPPoE connection.  When connected to the router, the router would be handling it and nothing would have changed since reinstalling Windows.  But if you haven't configured Windows to do the PPPoE connection when connected directly to the modem, then this would explain why it doesn't work.  You didn't say that the problem started after reinstalling Windows in your first post and that information would be important.

 

If you have cable internet service, then this is not the problem and we have to look eslewhere.

This looks like a classic case of the modem not being reset when you change connections.   Cable modems remember that physical address of the last device that they connected to and will not allow another device to connect until the reset is accomplished.   This is evident because the cable modem is not suppllying an IP address to computer when it is directly connected to the modem.   Are you sure you are following the network reset procedure I outlined in a previous reply.  It doesn't look like the cable modem is being reset.

Still not able to access the ineternet. It shows me sent packets but do not show me received packets.

That ipconfig output shows that you are getting a proper IP address from the modem and suggests that everything should be working.  What did you do between your previous post and this one.  Do you have any firewalls running that may be blockiing internet access?

Some cable modem only allow the device that was installed with the service to connect.   Before suggesting ways to get around this, please answer the following questions.

 

1.  Have you ever been able to connect any computer directly to the cable modem in the past?

 

2.   Did Comcast install your router or did you install the router?

I just renewed my  IP address by ipconfig/renew and then took this.

I have norton Antivirus 2006 installed and personal fire wall enabled. Do you want me to try disabling personal firewall and try connecting to internet.

 

As i mentioned in my last post. I am seeing sent packted but not received packets. Does fire wall has nay suhc rules which do not allow receive packets. Means do i want to check any in pount parameter.

 

I had a look at firewall few days back thinking of same and saw that Netbois and few of them are blocked. Do you want me to unblock those and check the connectivity.

 

Please let me know. Would also like to know why it works when I connected to router trough cable and why it does not work directly connecting to modem. Just an overview if any.

 

Try turning the modem off and leaving it off for more than 5 minutes.  Since it connects when using the router I doubt that it is a software or hardware problem with the computer and more likely due to the modem not completely refreshing itself and re-establishing the connection with Comcast.

Sorry,  all indications are that you should be connecting.  You are getting an IP address from the modem and you can connect when you are connected to the router.  My view from this end of the internet is that there is something wrong with the modem and doesn't allow it to completely reset.   You are taking the chance that if you can get it to reset so that you can connect to it directly, then you may not be able to get it to connect to the router.  If Comcast supplied the modem, my only suggestion is to call them.

I tried what you said. Result is same, not able to access any site. Even i disabled my norton firewall to see if it will give me some smile. But same not able to access internet.
