"Favorites" not accessible via internet explorer

When I click on the "favorites" button on my Internet Explorer (IE) toolbar, nothing shows up except a blank 1/2 screen with an "x".

I have confirmed that my "favorites" folder is on the c: drive/documents and settings/user account/favorites folder; and all my favorites show up there but do not show up on IE.

My wife's user account allows her to store and use favorites on the same computer so the error must be in my user account settings?  I previously had access to these folders via IE but now have lost access.

The main reason for this query (aside from the c onvenience of not having to re-type frequently viewed web addresses) is that I am trying to load MSN from disc and in the downloading it points to "favorites" to load MSN messenger (which must be downloaded before I load MSN Explorer) and I can not get anything to load to the favorites.

I hope this makes sense and someone has a fix for this.

I have also gone through the control panel to internet options to internet properties to the  advanced tab, and have "enable personalized favorites menu" box clicked.  This didn't work so I restored my system defaults and that too didn't fix it.

Suggestions?  Thank you in advance!
