Vista 64bit - 32bit Compatibility Mode

Ok so I have the age old problem with my 32bit OS it runs out of memory all the time, so the solution to this is to install a 64Bit OS and install more RAM.

Now my big problem is that the software I use “MapInfo” is not tested on Vista 64, I am just wondering if I was to purchase a copy of Vista 64 and install it on my PC. Then run my software under 32bit compatibility mode would I be able to use more than 4GB of RAM or does the 32bit compatibility limit the amount of RAM available to the program?

Also how good is the 32bit compatibility mode does it work with all programs?

System: XPS 730
OS: Vista Ultimate
System RAM: 4GB
Available RAM: 2.25GB
GPU: Twin 512MB 8800 GT’s

Run out of memory ? What is the real message ? And what are you running when getting this message ? "Run out of memory" may not mean RAM. You need to check your machine - Installing 64bit OS may not help if your chipset (& few other things) do not support 64bit.

His chipset is 64 bit so that is not an issue.  If you have a lot of start up programs this will take some memory resources and not necessary, so disable all but the anti virus software to save those resources.  Running in compatability mode when the 64 bit OS is installed should not be an issue.

Make sure when you install the 64 bit OS that you get the one with SP-1 included, take out two sticks of memory, leaving two gigs in, install the OS, turn off the system and install the remaining two sticks which will then be fully addressed by the new OS.

I installed the 64 bit version on my xps m1530 with 4 gig installed and never had an issue.  I have all the latest drivers etc and i cant see going back to 32 bit.  I have heard about removing ram to install but not on mine. it showed up as 4 gig dual channel memory and never looked back. I havent had any startup issues or anything.

If you disk had SP1 then it will work with the 4 installed. If not there were a couple of non pushed updates that were required to be installed be one could reinstall the extra 2 gigs. been there done that..

I think you need to do an OS cleanup first...

Installing the 64 bit SP-1 OS will show all 4 gigs or downloading SP-1 after installing the 64 bit OS without SP-1 originally as well, but it will still not Address the full 4 gigs without taking two sticks out first, then install the OS with SP-1, then turn off the system to install the other two sticks.

Many are thinking since it shows 4 gigs in the bios they think its being fully addressed.

Go to Systems Information and look for Installed Physical memory amount to see what amount is being addressed and let us know what it says....

I considered this but all my process only add up to around 100Mb and 42 of that is the desktop window manager followed by 24mb for explorer so that only leaves about 40Mb for all the other process. Which isn't worth trying to find the ones i don't need.

Thanks for the tip on installing Vista 64

I have never removed any ram, and installed 64 bit ultimate sp1, and system says 4 gig ram, and the program i use to see it called cpu-z, shows 4096 Mbytes, Channels: dual, DC mode: symmetrical.  I have 1 200 gig 7200 momentus(oem) with oem ultimate 32, media direct, restore, and i have 1 320 gig WD Black Scorpio with only 64 bit ultimate. Every hardware i own including printers, bluetooth devices, fingerprint scanner work flawlessly.

    hotrent1-

Regarding your Turbo Memory.  I don't believe Dell even offers it anymore and its not even easy to find.  Would you recommend it?
