Device manager does not detect 1390 dell wireless card

[I originally posted this in thread http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19254864/19436290.aspx#19436290 but have received no response so I thought maybe it passed under the radar of the site gurus]

The WiFI card in my Vostro 1000 is not operable and Device Manager (devMgmt) is not detecting the wireless card consistently - with the oddity of being able to see the card in devmgmt when in SAFE mode ONLY !

I have reseated the card.

I don't have options in the BIOS for viewing the 1390 details (Phoenix 2.6.2)

When I removed it from SAFE MODE it did NOT pick it up in Normal mode.

When I boot to "safe mode with networking" the screen is not usable - large lines down it (I possibly inadvertently installed the wrong version of software e.g. Japanese instead of international r157038).

When I boot to safe mode after removing it from devmgmt it finds it again and reinstalls it.

This issue was possibly caused by usage of Nokia software on the laptop to communicate with the (disappointing) e51. Tho' rstrui didn't solve anything.

I ran the recent Vista SP install after this issue started. When I booted the following morning there was a "Broadcom 802.11" device in devMgmt with yellow exclamation.

Downloaded latest driver from Dell and applied.

After applying it device looks correct in devMgmt.

When I press Fn-F2 it does NOT turn on the WiFi light (beside numLock, capsLock lights) on system BUT it DOES briefly show an icon/symbol on the desktop indicating that WiFi is On / Off.

Still no networks available so I reboot.

Upon reboot device is MISSING from devMgmt again.

HMMMMMM ?

If it's of any use the following hidden devices are also under network in devmgmt (along with the UNHidden Broadcom 440x)
