PROBLEM w/hard drive installation
Hi, looking for Volcano11.
REDCAP posted a problem on 05/29/04, and I have a very similar situation. You solved his problem.
I have a Dimension 4100 my BIOS version is A06. What I want is for the new drive to be master, and the old drive to be slave. First, I installed the 200 GB Maxtor HD, and used the Maxtor software to configure the drives as master/slave. (This did not work, as the setup screen was not set to boot from a floppy first.)
I reconfigured the drives as CS, with the 200 GB as the primary/master. All appeared to be fine, and the data from the old HD was copied to the new HD. I opened and used various programs, played games, browsed the WWW. I came back to the computer awhile later, and there was a black screen. I moved the mouse, and received the blue Dell logo screen. Then this message displayed: "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart." I was never were able to boot up after this with that master/slave config.
The only way I can boot the system now, is with the old drive as master and the new drive as slave. How can I reverse this?
This is the solution you provided to REDCAP: "Try going into the BIOS setup program and, on the Boot Screen, setting the first boot device to "Option ROM" - http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dzuul/syssetup.htm#boot_screen"
I don't have this option in my BIOS. What can Ido? I'm wondering if I have a bad HD (or two).
