Windows XP: Home won't shutdown automatically
Here's my story. Bare with me as I tell it.
I have a Dimension 8250. It came with a 120GB harddrive. I had upgraded that HDD with a 200GB. And I just recently bought a 250GB HDD and used the 200GB HDD on my other Dimension 8100 PC. I had no problem in the past. In fact, all HDD have been Western Digital and pretty reliable. The new 250GB HDD was working fine in fact until just recently (I had just installed Windows XP Home Edition and all the programs and files that I needed). Windows crashed, or at least I had turned it on and it didn't want to boot. Last thing I had done was run Disk Defragment on it, and I had to stop it. So I clicked STOP and then turned the program off and the shut computer off. When I turned it back on that same day it was saying that a HAL.DLL file was corrupt. So I tried downloading that .DLL file from the net but realized my other computer had it to. So I made a bootable floppy disk with MS-DOS and the HAL.DLL file so I could copy it. That didn't work and I kept getting the same message that it the HAL.DLL was corrupt. So then I went online and did some searching and I soon learned that I could use Recovery Console to run the BOOTCFG /REBUILD command to repair that file. So I did that and when Windows XP started it was loading all these different drivers. (I'm aware now that HAL.DLL is a file with a list of all the hardware on the system.) So everything was working fine, except that when Windows was booting I now had two different versions of Windows to choose to load from even though I did not reinstall Windows or any other version. I soon learned that that had to do with the BOOT.INI file and I soon got rid of the version that didn't work and had Windows starting up with the correct working version. Up til this point I've just been restarting the computer back and forth trying trying all these different things. So I thought I was done. I had completely recovered Windows. Then I shut it off and I realized two things: one, the shutdown menu has the buttons - Hibernate, Shutdown, and Restart (not Standby, Shutdown, and Restart w/ the option of pressing shift to Hibernate). I didn't think that was a problem until I clicked turn off...."It is now safe to turn off your computer." I haven't seen that message since my first computer that ran Windows 98. I can not wait for that message to appear everytime I want to shutdown my computer. And I can not have my computer not go on standby if I'm not around. I need it to go on Standby and I need it to shutdown automatically. I read around that if I went to the registry and changed:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\PowerDownAfterShutdown from 0 to 1 that it would fix my problem, but nothing happened. Same thing. Right now I'm so frustrated that I can't get this fixed.
