It isn't a question of them supporting the higher resolutions, they do, but more one of design, their web pages are in the portrait mode, as are a majority of web sites. Most all LCD are similar native resolution at certain screen sizes by the way, not only Dell.

To improve readability of text you will have to run in the native or optimal resolution for that monitor. If you have XP, enable 'cleartype', also you can increase the DPI in display properties to large or 120. Also use zoom to enlarge text in  most MS Office apps, web pages etc.: hold down the Ctrl key, and spin your mouse scroll wheel.
