I could not find a firmware update for it even checking the current selling notebook models. Look under the Device Manager's IDE ATA?ATAPI Controllers and see if it is in the PIO mode or DMA.
The drivers for the port come from the Windows load (standard IDE drivers). I was looking at firmware updates, but found none. If you have two drives that won't work, I would suspect (as long as the Device Manager has no yellow !) either the drives are not seating fully into the connector or the port is blown (motherboard replacement).
