Inspiron 9100 won't boot up

Question

My Inspiron 9100 wont boot up. It shows the screen where you can press F2 or F12, you know that first screen. Well, after that, the screen goes black and after an eternity a message comes up that says 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: (Windows Root)\system32
toskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of the above file'. So, I restarted my computer and did diagnostics, on the Pre-Boot System Assessment, there was an error that said: '--Start DST Short Test-- Test Results: Fail Error Code: 1000-0146 Msg: Unit 0: DST Log Contains Previous Errors' Could someone PLEASE help me. How do I reinstall a copy of this file? The dell troubleshooting and support have NOT been very helpful. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Message Edited by Blalack77 on 01-29-2005 03:02 PM

The Windows XP boot screen is missing or corrupted. (The one with the line that goes across the bottom as it boots.)  Have you tried installing a new boot screen lately?  Look on the net on how to extract that file from the XP CD and put it in the windows/system32 folder.  If that won't work, reinstalling Windows will fix the problem. It would be better to boot to the XP cd and choose to do a Repair rather than an install.
