Try putting it on a tray or other hard surface - not directly on your lap. It needs the small amount of space under it (between the rubber feet and the plastic case) to be free and open so that it can "breathe". Notebooks get very hot and can become unstable if used directly on one's lap - it can block the air intakes or vents.
Sounds like what is going on with the Inspiron 51XX series..... Hmmmmm..... The air flow problem, I know that there is an air flow port on the side, so t hat shouldn't be affecting anything.
i have the 1150 ---no such discovered problem--my machine has been a trooper....but it does sound like an overheating problem/as a result, I also recommending getting FanGUI -- a fan temp. monitoring utility that is free.
Glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I've had my Inspiron for two days and it started to lock up for no reason. The first two times it locked up I noticed the battery was about to die, but I didn't receive any warnings. The third and fourth times it locked up I had it on my lap and now that I think about it I probably didn't have it ventilated properly. It gets really hot.
Need to purchase something flat to place it on when using on lap. I'll report any other issues about this problem if I run into them again. Hopefully, I won't have anymore.
Downloaded FanGUI and playing with the settings I hope this works. What is a good temp. if all I'm using the laptop for office work and internet surfing? Right now it @ 104 degrees.
So does FanGUI work on an 1150? I was going to download it but its not on the list of compatable computers, but the 1100 is listed and aren't the 1100 and the 1150 exactly the same thing, besides the colour of the monitor/keyboard surround?
