there is no single known cause for that problem although there's been a lot of speculation. there is some decent evidence to suggest that the problem is caused by the wireless mPCI slot cover digging into the motherboard. the dust/heat problem may also play a role. changing the pressure around the O sc*rew has had an effect as well.
the bottom line: there is very little that you as a home user can do to effect the problem long-term -- the best you can hope for are some very minor fixes that may give you a little more time. if you are under warranty, call dell -- you will need a new motherboard (they may even give you a new system as the 5150s aren't being made anymore). if you are out of warranty, there are 3rd party repair options avialable. you can also buy a refurb motherboard from dell, although that is more expensive
I noticed that if i put pressure above my dvd rom the computer will boot up just fine..is this a grounding issue or something? does anyone have any suggestions on how i can keep this grounded? thanx
I think I solved the problem. As My warranty expired, I completely disassembled the laptop. Nothing seems to be wrong on the motherboard or the DVD-CDwriter combo.
I solved the shutdown problem. I put a piece of paper between the motherboard and the MiniPCI slot and in particular between the 2 metal pieces of the slot and the motherboard. To do that, you just have to open the O trap under your laptop. No need to disassemble everything.
Now everything seems to be OK. I can move my computer or touch the DVD-rom reader part of it without any shutdown.
Please try and let me know if it is working for you.
Im not sure what you mean by O Trap..I see an O screw, but dunno what u mean by O Trap...do u have a 5150 also?...well let me know on more details ok? thanx
refer back to my previous post -- at best, you're buying a little time. the IC chip on the board where the slot cover hits has likely already been damaged and will likely need to be repaired. you're not going to get away with not paying dell or someone else to fix this problem

There are a lot of threads regarding that touch problem. It's more common than you think of.
It's caused by static electricity, search in the forum.

Hi,
In fact, the problem hasn't been solved. It reappeared today but the system was perfectly working for few hours.
I don't know what happend.
This problem seems to be a common problem. I don't know if having the miniPCI card in the slot could solve the problem.
What do you think ?
