Your new DSL will require a new useranme and password. YOu should see a netwrok connection relating to your old ISP, just delete it and you can either configure the new connection manually thur the Internet Connection Wizard or let the ISP software do it for you.
So, does that mean I
can just unplug one and plug in the other? I need to know exactly what to do...step by step (I am not very good at this - but soon will be!). --V
First of all go to Start>ControlPanel>Network Connections and you should see something related to your old ISP account, delete it. Reboot your machine. I will assume your new ISP gave you a CD with the new modem , hook up your new modem to the phone line then power it up.
Now run the program from the CD and you are going to need the username and password they supplied when prompted. That should just about do it.
Yes, I got the whole package: CD, modem, directions, etc.
I went to Network Places and saw nothing about the old ISP - I looked through everything. Is there another place to look?
BTW...the device manager shows only the built-in modem, and not the 'Netopia' from EL.
Also, about a year ago a friend of ours, a computer tech, re-vamped this computer because of serious security leaks & viruses (my husband used to use this computer for telecommuting) - he had to dump the contents and start over. He asked if we wanted any of the EL stuff and we said no. Does that have anything to do with anything? --V
No, there would be nothing else to delete. The v.90 modem is used for dialup, so just leave that alone. Run the utility from SBC and it shold be self explanatory. Mt brohter-in-law in Yorba Linda uses them and the portal it creates is quite user firendly. You will actually access thur a web browser if you have the same modem they do, which has a built in wirless router.
