I have to call customer care today about my 9200 WUXGA that I received on 12/23.  I was thinking of having it replaced with another one, but am afraid I will have the same problems.  I'm wondering if they corrected the problems with the screen if there really are faulty WUXGA screens.  I don't want to turn this one in only to have the same problems.  So, I'm wondering if you are experiencing extremely small fonts and a shimmery, grain-like appearance on white or light backgrounds.  Do you see a washed-out look on icon colors and bars, etc.?  It would have the appearance of a sheer silk-like finish over everything.  Darker colors and backgrounds look okay.  Thanks for your help.

The effect you expirience is totaly normal on 17" WUXGA displays (not on 15,4" WUXGA) . It is not a DELL "problem", it is the typical apperance for this kind of displays, for example, sony has the same "issues". It is based on the technology. Small icons are also typical for 2,4 mil. pixels. Use the quick set in the taskbar and set your icons to large, this should help.

Would you check your packing slip and see what the part # for you display is ?

Some people get good ones and some don't.   I had my display replaced and the second one is better but still washed out and somewhat "shimmery" on the light colors.  this is definatly not the case with the Sonys Toshibas, or Hps that I have looked at with the 17" wuxga displays.

The part# for my WUXGA is #320-3901.  Is there a WUXGA screen with a different part number that is a better one?  Thanks.  I need a reply on this as soon as possible.

bobaldert  since your LCD panel seems to be OK what is it's part # ?   Maybe we could ask for that part # and save a lot of time.

320-3901 is the Item #  The Part # is all of the way to the right and probably starts with a W

My original one was W5412 although Dell's Web site showed me having Part # W4554.

Either way it was a bad one.   The original one was made by LG Phillips.  Dell sent someone out to replace it for me and it was replaced with one made by Samsung.  I unfortunatly did not get its part # from the Tech.  It was better than the original but it still has poor quality whites and light colors.  I guess I will just have to keep asking for a replacement untill they get it right.

By the way compaining by e-mail seems to work much better than the phones.  Just 48 Hrs from my original complaint untill the replacement was installed on my machine.

Good Luck

Chet

Chetb,
I found my packing slip and my WUXGA is part #W5412, same as your original screen.  I guess I have the bad screen then.  Still negotiating with customer care, but now it seems that we should ask for the Samsung Y4014, 17" Liquid Crystal Display.  We called customer care today, and we thought maybe attaching a 17" flat panel display would help since I'm not going to take this laptop out too much.  They gave us a $200 off coupon for their flat panel.  Not sure if I want to go through the hassels of turning this laptop in because of having all my info from old computer placed on this hard drive, but now it seems that there could be a better display.  How did you have someone come to your house?  I never heard of that.

Jason,
Sony does not have the same problems with their 17" wide screens.  My daughter's boyfriend has the Sony, and he does not have the sparkly screen.  His is crystal clear.  He saw mine, and is not sure he likes my screen with this anti-glare finish.

How do you go about doing this? Do you tell DELL that you want to replace your 9200 Inspiron WUXGA 17" screen (part #W5412) with the Samsung Y4014? Describe how the Samsung screen looks as far as the color, fonts, non-sparkly, etc. Thanks. So you are really pleased with the difference?

Heard from DELL customer care through email tonight, and they told me they are not able to exchange my 9200 WUXGA for the Samsung screen as this would not be a like to like exchange. I would have to return my 9200 for credit, and then start over with a new order. This would probably be a problem for me because it may end up costing me more in the long run if I do this. Also, I am a little confused that this wouldn't be considered a like to like exchange. Is the Samsung screen, Y4014, a lower resolution? It's not 1920 x 1200? Please help me out here. Thanks.

My machine came 1 week late from when I was supposed to get it. I was one of the
ones that was supposed to get it before Christmas but received it on 1/3.
Mine just came with the samsung display. So I guess I dont mind the delay in getting
the system.

As far as I am concerned the display is a good as my Desktop Samsung 19" and no it
is not less resolution. It has the same specs as the others.

This really makes me mad that they're telling me this would not be a like to like exchange. It sounds like it certainly would. If I return this laptop and start over, I'll end up with a more expensive deal since a coupon was used to purchase this one. Thanks for the help.

I changed the laptop for other reasons, but I guess you can tell them that if they don't agree for the exchange solution, you will send it back for a full refund (21 days policy; you don't need a reason to send it back). This should make them reconsider... On the other hand, if the 21 days have passed, you can call technical support, and ask them to change the screen. Of course there are some risks involved here. You might get a screen with some dead pixels (<5, so will not be en title for another exchange), or you might get a lower resolution screen by mistake (I heard this on a forum), so you will need to call again and arrange again for another screen change. Plus you need to send the laptop to DELL.
