You will need something to change the video from analog (what's on your VCR tape) to digital (what will be on your hard drive).  There are converters out there but if you do do have a digital video camera, that is the best converter out there.  I know that you didn't want to do this but like I said, it is the best converter.  If you do this, then you can hook it up to the firewire connection - between the video camera and the notebook.  You will need standard RCA jacks to hook up the VCR output to the video camera.  And if you already have a digital video camera, you will not have to purchase the converter (or capture card).

If you are planning on doing any editing, then you better have a lot of dedicated hard drive space.  This will take up a lot of room.

I also assume that you have some software that will edit the video if you want and then burn it to the DVD.

The video must first be coverted from analog to digital. The VHS tapes are analog. Some new stand - alone DVD recorders will accomplish this, but not just "burners". I think you will need to go through a digital video camera to convert the signal, then to your PC via capture, then to the burner. Pretty convoluted but it's simple once you get the hang of it.
