System tray

Question

Hi there   Do you know how to remove Spybot from the system tray?  I looked high and low in the settings folder.  I was advised that this doesnt have to be in the system tray, although because I have 'Block all bad pages silently' and 'Use Resident in IE sessions' enabled, perhaps I should keep it from startup.   Also, when I startup Outlook Express, MSN always startsup and remains in the system tray.  'Automatically logon to Windows Messenger' under 'Options' is NOT enabled, so I dont know what's starting it up.   Finally I check my BIOS to find out the speed of my hard drive, but could see it there, please can you let me know a bit more about this.    I apprecaite your comments and help. Kind regards. Julia

I can't answer the question on SpyBot.  But for the MSN starting up when OE starts up, you can't change that.  OE forces MSN to start.  When you close OE, MSN should shut down.  I have my MSN set to Not run in the background and to not automatically sign in.   As for the speed of the hard drive, you will not find it in the BIOS. regarding spybot, if you are getting a tray icon that looks like a file icon with a lock over it, you are probably going to the extreme in the protection sense. this can be disabled safely, as long as you keep spyware blaster running and scan often youll be ok.

you can go into the tools tab on the left hand side of the Spybot menu>click on resident>then make sure to uncheck "Resident Tea Timer" (protect over-all system settings) active.

then make sure to right click on the tray icon and close process.

Julia,   Your question may have been answered in the previous post, but for future reference you can use this to disable other programs from starting on boot.   if you go to your start menu and then go to run type in 'msconfig' and hit enter. a box will pop up and on the top right there is a 'start up' tab there you will have a list of programs starting when your computer boots. you can uncheck the ones you do not want to start. hit ok and then reboot your computer.   for example the program you are trying to get rid of in that list is called 'TeaTimer' if you uncheck the box next to that it will not start with your computer anymore. hope this helps   -Josh

if i were you i would disable the tea-timer from within spybot, rather than msconfig, due to future revisions of spybot my turn it on by default and this may cause future headaches.

my point is that i dont like to screw with the registry when i can fix a problem another way.

ok well we can try this anyway, just right click on the taskbar and if you have a choice for "properties" click on it.

then from there choose customize in the notification area, and then choose to "always hide" the tea-timer option.

bear in mind these are the directions for win XP.

you can leave it on if you want, but im constantly adding and removing programs so i find it to be a little annoying.

plus the combination of spyware blaster, spybot and adaware seem to keep me clean and green

you can make the tray icon invisible if you want, but only with win XP.

what OS are you running?

nevermind, i just checked and it says you have win ME and im unfamiliar with the user interface option on that.

I found S&D Helper and Tea-Timer under Tools\Resident.  There is one 'status' check box for each and, if unchecked, would disable these tools.  I can't see 'always hide'... Any ideas? Julia

personally, i would just uncheck the box for the tea timer, i find it to be over-kill. make sure to right click on the tray icon and end th process to get rid of the icon. ok ok ok

Julia   Yes, I would get into the habbit of running the three programs you have installed. Spybot, Ad-aware, and Spyware Blaster.   It really gets down to personal preference on what programs to use, but I suggest those. Remember to update.   -Josh

Once this is disabled, I guess I will just have to run S&D on a regular basis as I dont think 'S&D Helper' is running the background anymore, as Spybot is no longer in the system tray.  Would you agree?
