Dell sent a tech to replace my display, and surprisingly it fixed it.
I checked out the new display while the tech was changing it, and it's a different display... the old, bad display was part # W5412, and the label on the back of the panel showed it was made by LG-Philips. The new display is part # D8987, and it's made by Samsung. The Description of the new display is "SVC;LCD;WUXGA;SPWG;17;STB" in case that helps.
The new display shows virtually none of the terrible grain and sparkle of the first display. I was doubtful that replacing the display was going to help until the tech took it out of the box and I could see it was a completely different display. (And no, they didn't slip the lower-res display in on me - this is definitely WUXGA and I'm still running at 1920 x 1200.)
I hope it is shipping on new orders. I will have my second monday. From what I am hearing the news is getting better on new orders. But I just hope that is true for all new orders.
I replaced my I9200 for other issues and the new one came with a Samsung display which is better then the old one (4554). They might have the new 9200s with this display now.
Pah, I've just received my replacement 9200 and guess what? Its got exactly the same screen as the one i returned before Christmas, W4554, a panel so bad its unusable. Judging by this thread:
http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=55769&page=1&pp=15&highlight=9200
the WUXGA screens that are made by LG Philips are no good, DELL should recall them and replace them with the Samsung ones.
Having seen posts regarding people receiving their machines with the new Samsung display in early January, I thought I was safe to place my order for the 9200 with WUXGA on 1/17.
Well, the machine arrived on the 24th.... with the sparkly Phillips (W5412) display! ARGH!!!!
I've given it a week to see if the display is as bad as everyone's posts indicated. It is.
I'm on hold with Dell Tech Support as I type waiting to negotiate having them come out and replace this with the Samsung display.
If you're planning to order a 9200, don't think you're safe yet on not getting the Phillips displays. Apparently Dell is still shipping at least some of the orders with this display.

That's great to hear. Does anyone know if this display is shipping on new orders?
Thanks in advance!

That’s too bad. I’ve been waiting and I was just getting ready to order a 9200 this week. Let us know how the replacement turns out.
