If it were mine I would try reseating at least the video card and cable plug. While I was at it also the CPU and memory.  Perhaps something is not making good contact and once it heats up a little and expands everything works normally.

I have simliar set up.  Experienced screen issues for several months.  After a restart it would work quite well.  It failed a few weeks ago, one month out of warranty.  Dell replaced the video card which fixed it for just under $300.  If you still have warranty left I would jump on the issue with Dell.

Wow! That's a bummer.  You could have done it yourself for under $100, maybe under $50 depending on which video card you have.

They did suggest I could do the repair myself.  Dell would sell me the video card and send instructions on how to replace.  I was / am not comfortable with the process of taking that much of the notebook apart so I paid the premium to have them do it.  That is the price an all thumbs guy must sometimes pay.  The 8100 does not work just like brand new.  It was the ATI 84 video card.
