My guess would be to check if any BIOS updates have the fix for this, or if any video BIOS have the fix.

I have this exact problem as well with a sphanky new 8600+mobility 9k.

Installed the latest drivers, running bios rev 2.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

No solution here, but I've had the same thing happen several times on a new 5150. When you close the lid, it looks like it momentarily disconnects the display. Most times it recovers smoothly, but somethimes it fails and reverts to the default 800x600 resolution. At least that's what appears to be happening.

Lsudlow--

exactly what happens! the major problem for me is, I have to replace all my icons back, windows, emulators, etc. Do you think it's possible this is a hardware malfunction during the 'building' of the laptop and it's something we should return the items over? I don't want to get caught with me pants down further down the road with a 'perma' disconnected display.

:(

Since it's happening to several of us who have different models, I doubt it's a manufacturing flaw. I suspect that either the BIOS or the display driver is supposed to know what to do when the lid closes, but isn't quite handling it correctly. I'm hoping a newer version of the BIOS or driver will clear it up.

In the meantime, you're right. It's a pain to have to reorganize your icons every time it happens.

In my case, it only happens once in a while. If you're getting it very frequently, it's probably worth contacting Dell support to see if they know about it and/or have a solution.

I have experienced this problem too but only with Dell's most recent driver. Some of the older versions don't do this (if you want to use Dell drivers). I"m currently running the latest Catalyst drivers (3.9) and don't experience this problem. I should note however that I'm having pauses in my DirectX games every 10 minutes... so be wary.
