Inspiron 4100 and External Monitor

Question

Hi,   I have an Inspiron 4100 that I have always used with an external Dell flatscreen monitor instead of the laptop screen when I'm in the office.  Just the other day I plugged it in and the flatscreen doesn't come on.  I've tried holding down Fn + F5, and I've even been through the BIOS but there doesn't appear to be any relevant settings in there.   I can set Windows XP to Extend to the monitor in the Display Properties, and it works fine, but this is no good as I just want to use the flatscreen as my display, not run two displays.   Has anyone encountered this before, or have any ideas?   Thanks in advance, Little'un

Fn + F8 is the key combo to switch between laptop LCD and external monitor.
