On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Center, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic.

Don't know if it will help you....had same issue....you must make sure in "users" in the control panel that both computers have the same name/password user defined as an administrator. Apparently, they can't acknowledge each other in workgroups without that. Hope it helps. Good luck.

Just solved the problem with mine. It was the norton anti virus software this comes with a firewall as well. So just setting up the windows firwalls to file sahring is not enough make sure that the norton firwall is turned off also.

Hope this helps

Yeh I have had the same problem. What i noticed is that one of my computers which says it is connected to the network can't ping the Ip address that has been assigned to it from the 2350. Although it can ping the other PC and the router. It is all very fustrating. I phoned Dell and they couldn't help. If anyone has nay suggestions or if you have managed to fix the problem please fill me in.

Regards

Mike

Well I've checked the MS Firewall and the McAfee stuff and everything is as you all replied.  Still NO luck.  They are Dell computers and it's a Dell Router, so someone at DELL should know what's going or being able to help I would think.  We've only had these 7 days now and it's getting EXTREMELY frustrating.  What's the point of wirelesss and a home network if you can't share anything but an internet connection.

I wasn't sure about Mookie1150's response.  My wife and I set up each other on both laptops with exactly the same names.  We both have administer rights and we don't use passwords.  Ex:  User1 and User2 both have accounts on laptop1 and laptop2.  IE there is User1 on laptop1 and User1 on laptop2 as well as User2 on laptop1 and User2 on laptop 2.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one having this problem.  Maybe one of the DELL moderators can help.  (I've tried Dell's chat support and that's just a user reading a script with no technical knowledge.)  I need real support.

Thanks to volcano11 and Mookie1150 for trying to help.

For 99.9999% of the people coming here and reporting that they can't get file and printer sharing to work finally realize that the third party security software they have installed is what is causing the problem.  Many don't realize that the Norton products and McAfee products have firewalls and only after pointing this out several times do they make the effort to configure the firewalls properly to allow local network traffic.  So, anyone else having this problem, please look into the firewalls.

Well I've checked the MS Firewall and the McAfee stuff and everything is as you all replied.  Still NO luck.  Yes, I checked the McAfee Firewall which DELL installed as part of the McAfee Security Center on my DELL laptop prior to me receiving it.  I just went home at lunch and AGAIN walked thru the McAfee Firewall setting wizard.  I apologize, but I'm not a PC programmer and could show you screen shots to validate if you like.  It wouldn't be so frustrating if I didn't make a living as a mainframe programmer.  So it's not that I'm completely PC illiterate, it's just that this has me stumped.  Any further suggestions or requests?  I will gladly try anything.

Thanks for sticking with me and giving me a chance to learn and fix this.  It may be something that seems small and stupid to you once we figure it out, but right now it feels huge to me and my wife.

Disable the all firewalls, including the Windows XP firewall, as a troubleshooting step.

Thanks Steve for hanging in with us.

Yes, I believe so.  That was part of the settings I checked when I was home at lunch.  I have previously created a test folder with sharing (including changing the file contents by other users) in the root drive (c:\).  (I was originally trying to do it with some of our user folders, but MS clearly states that folders under the Documents and Settings hierarchy cannot be shared.)

Both laptops have the same workgroup just as FYI (one of the MS pages referenced this).

Any other suggestions/queries/advice?

Thanks again.

Is File and Printer Sharing enabled on both computers?  Have you designated Files and Folders as shared resources?

Ok.  I will do that when I get home tonight.  (About 3 1/2 hours from now).

Thanks again!

THANK YOU!  Well sort of.  I still can't see it in my Network Places, but someone earlier wrote about pinging and I found the IP addresses in the Dell 2350 Router Utility.  I then used the IP address to "run" on to the other laptop.  IE START->RUN->\\123.123.123.123  and that brought up the other laptop.  So, how do I check the correct "name" for these laptops so I can just \\laptopname to get there?

I am now SHARING files and don't have to worry about disk space.  Thanks for sticking with me.  If you ever want pointers on IMS, COBOL, DB2, SAS, MVS, TSO, ISPF, several CA MVS utilities, just let me know and I'll gladly return the favor.

To find out your the network name for each computer, go to Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System and click on the Computer Name tab.  Make sure each computer has a unique name on the network.  Keep the names simple - don't use spaces in the name.
