HELP Inspiron 6000 USB2 & 1394 External Hard Drive Problem.

Question

Inspiron 6000, 750(1.8GIG) XP Pro, WUXGA, X300, An external 1394/Firewire HD is not installed properly and locks up the mmc.exe (microsoft management console) when the HD is plugged in and I try to use dev mgr & disk mgr. An external USB2 HD will fail to install properly until you uninstall/reinstall the USB2 drivers a few times. These external HDs work fine in lots of other computers. The external 1394 chips are Oxford 911 best there is. External USB2 chips assorted but good. I did a repair install - no help I tried a PCMCIA 1394 card - no help.  My 1 GIG USB2 Thumb sticks work well though. I need to return the laptop unless there is a fix. Maybe needs new motherboard drivers??

Are the external drives powered? If not, try a powered USB 2 hub, or use the power supply.

Sounds like there is a compatibility problem with your external drive and the USB2 chipset on the motherboard, try and go to the maunfactors website of the USB/Firewire drive and see if there is an updated driver and if there is install it.
