I'm trying to do a RIS install of XPsp1 from a Windows 2003 server(latest patches, etc.).  I had the same problem, fixed it, but now there is another problem.   To get past the "the operating system image does not contain the necessary driver for you netowrkk adaptor."

You need to place the Windows 2000 NIC drivers into the i386 folder of the setup image, then place the Windows XP drivers into the $oem$/$1/drivers/nic folder.  Then delete all of the .pnf files from the i386 folder and stop and restart the 'remote installation' service.

When I did that the network adapter error didn't come up, however just after it says "Starting Windows" in text mode I get a blue screen of death.  Now I am stuck again.

I called Dell tech support for a possible resolution, but they didn't have one.

I got it to work with Server 2003/XPsp1 RIS with a GX270.  I used the following drivers for the gigabit nic.  http://support.dell.com/filelib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R54402

I put the Windows 2000 drivers into the i386 folder, and put the Windows XP drivers into the $oem$/$1/drivers/nic folder.

Then deleted all the .pnf files from the i386 folder, stopped and restarted the 'remote installation' and the 'single instance storage groveler' services.

Everything worked great after that.

This reason you get "the operating system image does not contain the necessary driver for you network adapter" is explained in my post:

Note:  It's a bug in the BINL parser that processes the .inf files. So you have to modify the .inf file (in our case, E1000325.inf for XP) that come with the driver set for your setup. The BINL parser cannot process any directives in sections like [Intel.NTx86] or similar. You have to change it to [Intel] or else it will ignore the whole section.

Even Intel has found this out, and they are offering new INF files for their drivers for use with RIS

If you are installing XP on the GX270 (or the GX260) via RIS you need to place the Windows 2000 NIC drivers in the $oem$/$1/drivers/NIC folder and drop the XP NIC drivers into the i386 folder of your setup image.  After that you need to go into the i386 folder of the setup image and delet all of the *.pnf files.  Once these are deleted, go and restart the "Remote Installation" and the "Single Instance Storage Groveler" services.

To fix all my driver issues I just dropped the .inf driver files for my network card, video card and sound controller into the i386 folder.  This seemed to take care of all my driver problems.

Boot up your GX270, press F12 and that should get you passed the network card error.

I got this workaround from Nordic, thanks Nordic!

just remember when you make a change to your install image, delete the pnf files and restart the services.

Hope this helps.
