If the external display is OK, the problem is with the cable to the mainboard or the panel itself. Reseat the cable. If that doesn't solve the issue, the new display is likely bad.

Thanks for the input. Unless someone else has ideas to the contrary, I'm going to send back the display.

I would concurr that the most likely problem is either a loose ribbon cable or bad cable.

Here is what the display looks like. Does this look like a bad display, bad cable, bad video card, or something else? Again, the external CRT display hooked to the VGA output on the laptop looks just fine.
