Have you tried clicking on "Add Network Place" in My Network Places?

Thanks for getting back.

Yes I have.

I have tried nbtstat -n on the Inspirion and it only "sees" itself and does not list a workgroup. On the Dim I get the Dim, the Inspirion, and the workgroup both are in.

I have disabled the firewalls on both computers but no change. I still can't see the Dim from the Inspiron. Now I know the connection is working because I can share files between the two. I can't share printers.

I tried the Winsocfix tool but that did not change anything.

Now I am really confused.   My impression from your first message that you could not get the other computer to show up in My Network Places, yet now you say you can share files.  How can you share files if you can't get the other computer to show up in My Network Places?  Are you absolutely 100% sure that you have disabled all firewalls?  If there is any doubt, uninstall all possible firewall programs.  I can't count the number of times that I have gone back and forth on these fourms insisting that this is a firewall problem, only to have the person eventually say something like "Oh, I didn't realize that Norton (or McAfee, or XXX) also had a firewall - as soon as I disabled that, everything is now working".

I assure you that I have researched this enough to know that the firewalls are not the cause. I have disabled Windows Firewall and all elements of NIS.

I can see everything in My Network Places on the Dim but not in My Network Places on the Inspiron. The Dim end is working perfectly. Even to sharing a printer on the Inspiron.

The problem is that the Inspiron does not know it is part of a workgroup.

Yes I can share files both ways.

See why this have be pulling out my hair.

I have tried about 3 different links referred to me by this forum. I every case the Dim is determined to be working. In every case the Inspiron does not give the results the link site calls for.

The last link I followed was to MS Support - How to troubleshoot home networking in Windows XP. Knowledge base: Q308007

Forgot to add that on the Inspiron when I run the "fsmgmt.msc" command. Get a split window called Shared Folders. In the left pane I select Shares. Then in the right pane I see the list of folders that I have marked as shared folders. I think I should be seeing at least these folders when I select My Network Places on the Inspiron. However, I do not.

I'm about one step away from reinstalling Windows XP. This will be a lengthy process because I gor the Inspiron from Dell with XP Home SP1 installed. This means that a reinstall is a two step process. 1. Reinstall XP Home SP1 then 2. Reinstall SP2
