I hope somebody can figure this out, I have the exact same problem.  The little icon in my system tray is currently "x-ed" out as I write  this message online while listening to MusicMatch on Demand.  I'm on a Dell 5160 with a Dell Wireless WLAN 1350 WLAN Mini-PCI Card, NetGear WGR614 v5 router.  Further, I get different icons in the system tray indicating my connectivity.  Sometimes I  get what looks like a computer monitor, other  times I get  something that looks like a California desert windmill.   Thanks for any insight anyone has to offer.:smileyhappy:

I have a very similar problem. I have a 9200 and an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. My card would renew the ip address with the router, then it resets to the default ip address in about 3 minutes (you can check yours by going into the dos shell[start->run->cmd] and typing ipconfig -all, if you have a default ip address it will usually start with "169.")I emailed DLink support (I use a di-614+ router) and This is what they told me.


"Try to reset TCP/IP stack and then release and renew the IP address of computer. Follow the steps given below:

Reset the TCP/IP Stack
Click the Start button.
Click Run.
The Run window appears.
In the Open: field, type:
netsh int ip reset \resetlog.txt
Click the OK button.
The following registry keys are rewritten:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCP\Parameters\

For releasing and renewing the IP address of the wireless card please follow the steps given below:

To release and renew IP address, go to Start > Run. Type in CMD and press Enter. At the prompt, type in ipconfig and press Enter. This will display the adapter information such as IP address, Subnet mask, and default gateway.

To view additional information such as Mac address, DNS servers, etc, type in ipconfig /all.

To release IP address, type ipconfig /release.

To renew IP address, type ipconfig /renew.

If still the issue is not resolved then it would be best to assign a static IP address to the laptop. Follow the steps given below:

Step 1 Click on Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network connections.

Step 2 Right-click on the Local Area Connection which represents your network card and select Properties.

Step 3 Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. Enter your IP information for your network. The IP address must be in the same subnet as the router/access point. For example if the IP address of the router is 192.168.0.1 then the IP address of the computer must be 192.168.0.x. The IP address must also be out of DHCP range to avoid IP conflicts.

Make sure the default gateway and a DNS server is the IP address of the router (the default IP address for Dlink routers is 192.168.0.1)"

It seems to be renewing the ip address but it is renewing with the router and not resetting to default. Hope this helps.

Check for spyware first if you have a slow boot time.

If you have an Intel wireless card, do not have both WIndows controlling the wireless and the Intel Proset controlling also.

If you have XP SP2, then uninstall the Proset Utility - if the driver also unloads, just go to the Device Manager and manually install it under the Wireless entry in the Ethernet Adapters heading.  If you want to use the Proset utility, go to the Control Panel - Network and Dialup Connections - the entry for the Wireless card - somewhere in the Properties will be a box to uncheck about letting Windows handle the wireless connections.  Sorry but I don't use XP so I cannot be more specific.

For spyware, a lot of people use Ad-Aware Personal SE and/or Spybot Search&Destroy. These can be found online pretty easily and they are free.

Thanks Fasut42 re spyware. I acquired Microsoft AntiSpyware. Scan showed Zero.

Thanks Johnalg re, I believe, the "wireless not connected", and lack of establishing local network. I tried you information but clearly need more specific directions. Can anyoone out there add to Johnalg information?

Now I cannot connect with my wireless network. It shows excellent strength. I can connect with other networks.
 
Help would be appreciated in getting connected to my wireless network.

Art, did you resolve the "not connected" issue? I have the same problem on the same machine using the same Intel Pro... What's up with this?

Unfortunately Larry, I had three issues in my original post. 1. wireless showing as not connected when it was. This "cleared" during my work on the more important item - 2. I cannot connect with my local area network - computer not accessible and network not accessible messages. This has not changed 3. slow boot.

Which issue are you referring to?

Larry,

The "wireless not connected" has been replaced by "limited or no connectivity". Ususally it is telling the truth; it always changes to "Connected" in less than a minute. Why it changed, I don't know. In trying to set up a network described by:

Inspiron 9200 Windows XP feeding to D-Link DI-524 Wireless Router. Trying to set up network with Dimension Windows 98 connected through LINKSYS 10/100LAN Card by cable to DI524. Both computers access the internet. Dimension recognizes Gateway.

it just happened; that is the change was not recorded. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Incidentally, my efforts to establish a network resulted in dead ends, for me, and a resort to "Restore".

If you have a network similar to my description above, I have some questions.

Do you have WEP enabled?  Check the key and put that in your configuration.  That helped me and I haven't had that problem since.
