Jesse, I'll second what Wazant suggests: it would be good to hear more from Dell on this issue. I am in the market for a flat panel monitor and was about ready a month ago to order the 2405FPW - until a quick web search turned up this forum, and the numerous complaints of unpleasant high-pitched noises from these monitors. I have put any purchase on hold until there is some indication that Dell has solved the problem. I'm not in the mood to spend the next several months exchanging monitors, hoping to eventually get a quiet one. What's happening at Dell?

I dont want to JINX myself.
However, i hope to bring some good news to you guys.

I've been running my July Dated screen for an entire full day and it has Not given off any high pitched noise.. YET...

is dell testing them? is that why the cable is still plugged in?

i agree with the previous post..
Mr. Moderator, please get on dell to give you some solid information.

I was on the phone with Dell, actaully ordering, when i came upon this thread. It wasn't hard, but I did have to at least type 2405L problems. The rep on the phone offered an additional $25 off. Yeah whatever. This 2405 seems great from the ad, but geez, it's almost been a year and they still have these problems? Anyone have problems with the HP, or can recommend another monitor?

I got a new 2405 on Saturday, and installed it Saturday night. The display is fantastic. On Sunday night, the high-pitched whine that people are posting about here, showed up. On Monday I called Dell. I had no problem and no long wait for tech support. They immediately offered to ship me a replacement monitor, and it arrived the next day. But, on the side of the replacement box, it says it's a refurb.

Does it also still squeal? Anything else wrong with it?

I haven't opened it yet; I'm trying to decide if I should accept a refurb. What do people here think? Should I accept it?

Tough call.

1) if you bought a new unit, I would think you'd want a new one as a replacement.  Is it Dell policy to replace faulty hardware with refurbished equipment?  You probably didn't pay for a refurbished unit did you?  I would call and ask so you don't feel cheated out of a couple hundred bucks price difference.  I'm sure they'd take care of it in a heart beat.

2) if it works, and you like it, refurbs are typically the same quality as new, often times better since they go through QA again.  In this forum, it would seem that we all agree QA ain't hot enough to catch these buzzing units... so a second run through QA is good.

That being said, I got a new unit as a replacement and it's fine.

In the United States all manufactures including Dell can not sell returned merchandise as new it must be identified as used, in Dell’s case they mark it as refurbished. A refurbished unit could be anything from a monitor that someone received, had second thoughts and simply returned it unopened. It could also be a monitor that has a serious problem was fixed and placed in stock to be used as a replacement monitor. You just never know what your getting so I always insist on new when it’s in the allotted grace period of the sale agreement.

To insure that I wouldn’t get a refurbished monitor when the first monitor I ordered turned out to be defective, developed the squeal, I returned it for a full refund; waited a few weeks and than place a new order.

Luckily for me the second monitor has been working perfectly but if it turned out to be defective, like the first, I would have returned it for a full refund too and was leaning towards purchasing my second choice – an Apple 23 inch Cinema display instead of waiting for a a confirmed fix from Dell.

Normally the problem is heat related and will manifest itself within a few hours of continuous operation. If it hasn’t developed after 2 or 3 days of using the monitor for 3 or 4 hours a day you probably don’t have anything to worry about.

With my original monitor it took about 60 or so minutes for the squeal to go from unoticable to intolerable. Once the monitor was fully warmed up it could be heard from twenty feet away, but as soon as the backlight shut down when the monitor went to sleep the squeal disappeared. Immediately wake the monitor up and it would instantly start squealing again.

so far no noise.. perhaps only the people with the bad monitors flock to this forum..

then again, i've got my ears pealed.. it's only 4 days old.. and i've only run it for 2 solid days.

Has anyone got their monitors replaced with the new one?  I just got a replacement unit today.  I don't mind refurbished, but this one is ridiculous.  It looks like it went through some abuse.  Scratched up exterior, the stand is falling apart, and worst of all, high pitched squeal!

I used my new 2405 FPW for an extended period for the first time today. Sure enough, after a few hours I heard a terrible high pitched whine. I was rather hoping it was my computer, as fan noise is simple to take care of. Unfortunately, it is coming from my beautiful new monitor. I did a quick google search for "2405, whine" and began reading the complaints.

Here are some other bits of interesting info:
-Manufacture Date: May 2005

- I changed the options in the ATI advanced tab pertaining to DVI frequency and I could hear the whine change pitch. Changing the brightness had a similar effect.

- I put my floor fan next to my desk and had it blowing directly on the monitor. After 10 minutes, the whining stopped completely. The only noise is the typical very faint lamp buzz. This is evidence that this is a HEAT ISSUE. Naturally, having a fan blowing on this expensive panel is ridiculous, but I just wanted to test and put the information out there. I am trying to figure out what my next move will be since I am afraid of getting a crummier refurb!

My apartment is NOT a hot environment. I have it at around 75-77 degrees Fahrenheit now that it is summertime. This is unacceptable.
