Have to re-install Windows 98? I have never heard of this before. You were smart to discontinue the discussion. Most providers don't even want to open your PC so they use USB interfaces.
When I had my Dell built I had an ethernet card installed and subsequently went to a cable connection. They ran the cable to the external modem and it was a simple matter of connecting the RJ45 cable to the card and adjusting the settings. They will also install the card with NO reinstallation of Windows or waiver. However.........be warned, once you get used to the speed, you'll never be able to go back to a dial-up.

It would be interesting if people with broadband Internet connections were to post whether they have ISDN, DSL or Cable, who their ISP is and if they would recommend that provider.
Thanks for the link to that article it was very interesting.
I have a cable modem by MediaOne RoadRunner. I read their forums and hear people complaining. I, personally, have not had much trouble in the 5 months I've been connected. I bought my modem($200) to get $10 off of the usual $39.95/mo cost. That may have been a mistake. M1RR is now switching modem types in the Boston area. I haven't heard if/when they'll do that in in my area (NH) but if its within the next year I'll have a Lan City modem to sell.(any takers??) And I'd have lost money.
As far as speed, I LOVE IT. I had used a dial up connection at a friends. I didn't own a computer and couldn't see spending so much money on something so slow. THEN cable came to my area. I bought a computer and have been having a ball ever since.
As far a security, I use a web site ever few weeks to check things out. Steve Gibsons www.grc.com. I get very high marks for stealth stuff but know I should invest in a security program such as Black Ice Defender which is spoken of highly on these boards. I also had Dell install the ethernet card and when M1RR came out to hook me up it didn't take more that 30-45 min. No reinstall of anything.
Well, I've rambled on enough. Hope this helps in some way.

I have dsl connection and no reinstallation of Windows o/s was required. I added a network card to my computer (I did the installation - it was a snap, literally), installed some ISP/networking software provided by my ISP, plugged in the modem and that was that. Covad installed the inside wiring and the line and provided the modem.
I would recommend DSL over cable any day of the year, if you have it available to you.
I've had a Time Warner Roadrunner connection for almost two years. It has been Super! Very little down time and accessable customer service have made it a pleasure. It sometimes gets slow in the evenings, but I'm sure my connection speed is not the limiting factor at that time of day. At all other times it's Instant Gratification!
