Silly screen size question

I should probably know this already, but am considering getting either the Inspiron 600m or 700m and want to get it right...  When the display size is listed as 12.1' or 14.1', is that the actual width, or the diagonal?  If it's the diagonal, does anyone know the width to height ratio so I can figure out the actual screen dimensions? Or is that info available somewhere???  Thanks!

The list size of display is diagonal. The width to height ratio of wide screen is 16:9, and the normal screen is 4:3. The 600m is equiped with the normal screen, and 700m is equiped with the wide screen.

that would be true for regular pc monitors, but aren't laptop screens and other lcds at a 5:4 ratio?
