It isn't under warrenty any more. Isn't there anything i can do? I'm typing this on the laptop right now, sow it can't be such a big problem. I often repare broken computers, just don't know that much about laptops. Do you know what the exact problem is with the system board?

Here's one link that explains the problem and provides a repair shop link - it'll probably cost a couple of hundred dollars, but be cheaper than a new board from Dell.

Hopefully it's under warranty - call Dell; it needs a replacement system board.

AQSTech charges $159 plus shipping each way to resolve this issue. Until Dell issues a recall for this model, this is your only reasonable way of getting a working machine. If you do choose to have this model repaired, keep your invoice as proof in case the model does get recalled.

(I don't work for AQSTech, I just believe strongly in what they're doing and the fair price that is being offered for their services. Dell, recall the 5150.)

Hello,

The flashing cursor is not a good sign. It's not the same problem as the pressure shutdown and other 5150 conditions.

We have been researching this problem and it seems to possibly stem from heat (of course) but is usually due to bad or poor contact of either the CPU socket and or other North bridge chip.

This repair is currently  pending resolution.

I recently had the "5150 shuts down when bumped" problem and after some searching around I found some instructions here:
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/43678/

I followed the advice, with the exception that I didn't pull my laptop apart, I did it all just by removing the C panel and the wireless card.

Its been working perfectly for a couple of days since and I updated the post above with my own steps. It took me 10 minutes from removing the C panel to putting it back on again.

Hopefull that will be of some assistance to people. Its certainly cheaper then paying Dell for a new motherboard.
