I just received the following from SanDisk and the results are not encouraging - although I'm not sure since the text on the speed of the TI reader should be more than fine. I'm not sure what speed has to do with anything but here is the reply that I received.

Thank you for contacting Sandisk Technical Support.

Due to the speed and the capacity of this Ultra II SD 2.0 GB card a lot of digital devices are not compatible with this it. Although the laptop is new, it might not be built to handle such capacity and speed.
You have to contact the computer/reader manufacturers to verify that their devices can handle this the 10 MB/sec 2.0 GB card.

Latest reply from TI. Basically they told me to speak to Dell, who told me to speak to TI. TI will neither "confirm nor deny" that 2GB secure digital cards will work in the SD slot so we are still waiting for Dell to figure out where the problem lies. Anyone out there monitoring the situation? I may end up calling again shortly as I have a service number for this issue. Here is the message from TI:

Thank you for contacting the Product Information Center at Texas Instruments. My apologies for the delayed response. Our devices are used in many PC's and add-in cards from many manufacturers. If you are encountering difficulties with the PCI port on your PC or add-in card, please contact the manufacturer for support. Texas Instruments does not provide any support for these end products.

Additional information

To find the manufacturer of the card, use the FCC's web page "

http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/ " < http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid > to search for the FCC ID number printed on the bottom of the card. If it came preinstalled, please contact the store where you purchased the computer.

Third-party vendors have developed C&SS driver support for other operating systems. These vendors include Phoenix, System Soft, and Award:

I managed to get my 700m to recongnise my 2gb sd card. I download the TI PCIxx21 driver and replaced it over the PCIxx20 driver. Now, I can read and write on my 2gb SD card.

Hope this will temporary help everyone until Dell came out with a new driver.

Where did you download this TI PCIxx21 driver and what procedure did you follow to install it on  your 700m?

I did a Google search and found a non-Dell TI PCIxx21 driver, which I installed successfully on my 700m after uninstalling the TI PCIxx20 driver. After I rebooted, Device Manager still showed the TI PCIxx20 driver and the card reader would still not recognize my 2GB AData drive and asked to reformat it.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Perhaps if Dell can't see fit to offer drivers for its own products, we can move to Packard Bell.

There is a copy of the driver I downloaded. Hopefully this will work. It's pretty disgraceful when Dell's top of the line ultraportable laptop won't even read 2 GB SD cards when manufacturers have out 4 GB cards at just over $150.

I installed the parkardbell driver too. What I did as below

1) Install the PB driver.
2) Go to device manager to manually change the PCIxx20 driver to PCixx21 driver.

You guys are great.  It works!!!  I can now read my 2gb sandisk ultra ii.

Has anyone gotten this to work with a 4 gb sd card?  I'm think of purchasing one but I'm afraid it wont work on my 700m

I also downloaded the newer driver from Packard Bell's Web site.  Yes, I can then read my 2GB Kingston SD card.  However, that driver is not specifically made for the 700M and I have video problems with this driver.  I can no longer return from standby mode, the LCD is black.  I returned to the DELL driver and standby works fine again, but of course I cannot read high-capacity SD cards.  I've spent hours on the phone with DELL support.  They claim that this PC was made before high-capacity cards were available and so there is no intent to provide a new driver.  Interesting...  I have an HP desktop that is 2 yrs older than my 700M and it reads the high-capacity cards just fine.  I'm pretty disappointed about this, as one of the reasons I bought a small laptop was to be able to dump pictures to it while on trips.   I've ordered a PCMCIA multicard reader from Amazon.  Doesn't seem like I should have to go this route but this is getting rediculous.

Unfortunately I have come to realize what a disgrace Dell is with regard to its laptops at the very least. I'm sorry to say that unless you perform a full rectal exam on any piece of Dell equipment you buy, be prepared for them to cut a significant corner. They will provide excellent service in one place (where it is most visible) and be completely lacking in other areas that are important to the consumer but less visible.

This unfortunately is a serious issue. 2 GB cards came out simultaneously with the release of the 700m and before the 710 and TI told me that it's Dell that isn't putting out the driver and not that the hardware isn't capable of supporting it. The fact that Packard Bell puts out drivers for their hardware for 2GB+ capacity and Dell doesn't shows you the depth to which Dell has unfortunately sunk.

Thanks Jeff, I was wondering why all of a sudden my laptop wouldn't return from Hibernate anymore. I failed to make the connection that it was possibly the non-Dell driver mentioned here I installed that allowed me to read the 2GB cards.

I use Hibernate a lot, so what to do... :smileysad:

I find it rather pointless to have an SD card reader that won't read cards that are likely to be very popular or only a portion of what is likely to be owned. If you have a camera with 5MP or 7MP you will very likely own a 2GB SD card. There is no good reason not to have drivers and unfortunately I own only 2GB and 4GB SD cards so it doesn't help me at all.

It's like having a CD/DVD ROM drive that currently only reads CDs. Sure you can be grateful but I would say it's absurd and misleading to think that you've got the capability to be on par with the market but seriously underdeliver.

No question, it is an inconvenience and Dell has dropped the ball here.

But, on the other hand, I suppose we should be grateful it has any kind of card reader, so using a max 1GB card, or a even a card reader for a 2GB is not necessarily the end of the world. It's not like we have no options.

We are all in the same boat. It seems either - or decision. If you want to use 2 GB SD cards -- like every other laptop other than Dell can -- then you lose proper hibernation. I too have this problem suddenly and it now makes sense. Unfortunately I need hibernation and will have to go back to using a USB universal key drive or using my PCMCIA reader since Dell is the only one that can write drivers that will enable their laptops to use advertised features that don't correspond with the 21st century.

The whole "the 700m came out before high capacity SD cards" rationale is absurd. I have an Alienware notebook (sadly, Dell now also owns Alienware, maybe their SD card readers will stop working too!) that I bought 2 years before my 700m, and its card reader reads a 2GB SD card just fine.

Guys thank you so much!  This was brilliant.  I have a 300m and it wouldnt read my 2GB SD card.  I installed the driver you guys linked to and BOOYA, it works!  I didnt have any hibernation issues, and havent noticed any side effects whatsoever.
By the way, any ideas on how to upgrade my All in one printer to read a higher SD card? :)
