Does anyone know if there is a problem with these internal network cards? This laptop is the 2nd one where i formatted and reinstalled windows and suddenly the NIC no longer shows a connection. (all hardware was functioning prior to reinstallation) I reinstalled using the original dell reinstallation CD with sP1. After reinstalling, the connectivity lights no longer come on, but the hardware is listed in the Device manager. I tried upgrading the drivers, and even the bios. Unfortunately, they are no longer under warranty.Has anyone seen this problem before?
-it's not the network wire (i replaced that and tested it with another laptop and the wire worked)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
yes, i installed the most recent drivers for all hardware.
Sorry to ask a basic question but have you actually connected your NIC to a router?
If you haven't then there will be a X over the NIC icon in systray.
Thank you all for your input. I have found out that the culprit is the batch of wires i just purchased.
The 8200 in question was working on that network connection before the reinstallation using the dell restore CD. After reinstalling, the connectivity light stopped showing active. (This happened on a different 8200 where i followed the same procedure)I replaced the wire and it still wasn't working. I put another laptop at the same connection and it worked. What i didn't take into consideration was that the laptop i used was a Dell 5100, and the network wire i used was from the same batch of patch cables. I moved the "faulty" 8200 to another workstation and the network connection began to function. Upon inspecting the patch cable at that workstation i realized it was a different manufacturer than the one i set the machine up using. After inspecting the original patch cable i realized it was only using 2 of the usual 4 pairs(wires inside of connectors). So after i replaced it with a completely different brand wire it began to work. So, after a good 5 hrs of inspecting and checking and reinstalling 2 different machines 2 times i realize this. LOL :) Well thanks for the input on this. I guess the 8200 looks at all 4 pairs unlike the 5100.
