Yeah - I can live with just being a little behind, it's all too common from larger PC suppliers. But being so far behind, and shipping drivers that their are widely known to cause BSOD conditions is somewhere between plain lazy and downright unprofessional.

Thanks .... read it with interest.

Just beyond belief that DELL could run a public forum like this and not read and take notice of the experiences of their customers, especially for their higher end kit.

For my part, I have to say that I've been on the 72.01 drivers for a week now and I haven't had one instance of the dreaded "freeze or BSOD" on exiting a program. Prior to upgrading I was getting at least 1 crash every day or so. Also, since I'd read several reports describing pretty much exactly my symptoms plus confirmation that a known bug had been fixed in 72.xx for this, I'd say (still with fingers crossed) that the driver upgrade has nailed it.

Yea I tried that driver in my machine, but it didn't work either....
I'm anxiously waiting for my new machine and pray it works right....
There's nothing worse than a machine that locks up...

Yes I did.
I even went as far as uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them in safe mode.....

My driver upgrade seemed to work without this though.

I agree taking a few extra minutes using a driver cleaner tool to prevent future driver problems down the road is a wise choice. As for the driver problem this has been a problem for laptops from the start not just with dell with all laptop manufacturers. And i also agree dell needs see this as a huge problem adress it and start surporting their products that us as consumers buy.It is fact that mobility drivers will always be a little behind because it is a never ending task with keeping up with newer softwareware. And the exsesive testing that dell does even slowes it down even more because dell wont release them untill they have been put through a long series of testing.Supplying us customers with updated drivers is dells responsibility. I think they have been relying on us consumers to moreless do their job for them for too long now! Dell needs to wake up and start supporting their products and supply consumers with the adiquit drivers it is not like we are talking about a entry level budget laptop that are specificly designed to do minamul task.We are talking about highend laptops that are very expeincive and specificly designed and advertized by dell to performe acording which they dont because of dells lack of supporting their products and their customers. This is a prime example and a message that dell sends out of a huge buisness not caring about the smaller percentage of costomers that buy there more expencive highend systems.I consider myself lucky because my particular laptop at this time the inspiron XPS with the 9800 video card i havent really seen any driver issues with it yet.But i have owned two other dell laptops and been throught the nightmare of spending hours  finding 3rd party drivers for my laptop to work somewhat which is a outrage after being a loyal dell customer.Dell you really need to stand up and adress this problem and support your products.

Did you start out with a 9300 and upgrade it to the XPS?
I'm kind of wondering if I should have done that myself ...
The problem was that the XPS was going to be about $700.00 more then the 9300 that I bought and it is basically the same machine except the 6800 card on the XPS is overclocked...
At that price though I could have bought an ALienware laptoip and those are specifically designed for gaming....

Mine's just a plain 9300 - I'm based in the UK. Not sure if it's the same in the US, but we get the option to order the base model with the 256mb/Nvidia 6800 from the start. In fact we don't have an XPS listed in the US, just the 9300 with different PCI-x graphics cards. I looked at alienware too - reasonably happy with my choice of the DELL now the BSODs have gone, even though the box isn't as funky.

Thank you so much for the link to the newer nvidia driver for dell. I was having the same BSOD on my i9300 and it is fixed now!

Glad it helped. This one was really annoying me until I also found this forum and the link to the newer drivers. Still can't believe DELL are doing nothing about this.

Have you called Dell regarding this issue? May I have your service tag?
You may check the other threads. Some suggest downloading an updated driver.
Im currently looking into this matter myself.

Thanks,
Marl
