Joybell,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

It would be well worth it for you to use a virus scanner on your system.

Thank you. The Latitude only has a firewall (free zonealarm) but no antivirus program running. Is there a free virus scan I can download? Symantec (I have Norton on my Dimension) used to have one but I can't find it. Eventually, maybe sooner than later, I will have to protect the Latitude as well, but I don't want to purchase an antivirus software program with my credit card on a system that has a virus on it right now!

Click HERE for Panda Free Virus/Spyware Scan

You must use Internet Explorer, Free scan is accessed from lower left side. click for a popup with instructions.

It found three that Norton had not.

Thank you. I will try the Panda scan. I did use the free Norton scan and the result was "no infection found".

Panda scan found a Trojan type virus named "downloader.DAK" on the Latitude and disinfected it. I'm impressed! I have had utter faith in Norton and subscribed to it for over 9 years for my main computer (now a Dell Dimension 8250). Now I wonder...........

C 510 - I have had the same problem and found that I don't have any viruses on the machine.  Tech Support thought it might be the XP2 update I put on the system, but one I back it off and was back to XP1 with updates. Still had the problem.  Finally had the keyboard and Palm Rest replaced.  Problem has currently not happened

Well, I think it might be a hardware problem after all. It worked well for about a week, after the virus was found and cleaned. That may have been a coincidence. Today I experienced this erratic behaviour again. At times the cursor just gently crawled diagonally across the screen, then disappeared in the upper right or lower left screen margin. I ran a virus scan again and this time it came up clean. So, what next? Is there a way to run a diagnostics? Call a Dell technician? BTW, the behaviour is the same even when using the touchpad instead of the mouse.

You mention a USB Mouse, often the loading of Driver (software) for it may damage or remove
the Driver for the Touchpad.

You did not mention the model of your Latitude, most of the more recent versions came with
ALPS (brand) Touchpads, {HERE} is the Driver used for the ALPS.

Some Latitudes have Synaptics TouchPads and {HERE} is the Driver for that brand as well as {Synaptics Driver Website}

At the bottom of the Dell Driver pages linked above, click to check which of the two Drivers would be for your system.

If it is a hardware issue, you will need to telephone Dell and they will probably have you run the Diagnostic Utility that should be installed on your system (F12 at bootup to have that done).

The mouse is a plug and play Targus optical notebook mouse. It worked fine for over two months (and so did the touchpad). Now, for some reason unknown, there is no problem with it today. This even though I have not done any changes to the system. It is erratic. The notebook is a Dell Latitude C800 that we have never had any problems with. Thanks for the links. If we have problems again (which I think we will because nothing has changed) I'll check into the touchpad drivers and maybe we will have to do without a mouse.

The mouse went crazy again, so I will need to download the touchpad driver for the Latitude C800. Which one would that be? Thanks!

Niether one of the two links has the driver that is compatible with the C800. Maybe there is another driver download somewhere?

Synaptics Driver for C800

Link above is the one listed on the Dell Downloads & Drivers (from the dropdown menu, under "Product Support" upper left of this page).

This will work on your C800 Win2000 system.

I prefer the Synaptics TouchPad to the ALPS and one reason is the superior support from Synaptics (as well as Dell).

You will notice that the one on Synaptics Download is version 8
and the one on the Dell Download is a 7, either one should solve your problems, the '8' may have more features.

edit: You should not have to do without a mouse, you may have to reinstall the above driver again after installing MS Mouse, but you should
be able to use both. It is just that MS Mouse Drive likes to convert Touchpad to a generic MS Driver and you should fix that.

Thanks so much Art. I downloaded that driver to a CD on my Dimension, installed it from the CD on the Latitude and so far so good. For now we are using the touchpad only. If it behaves we might reconnect the mouse, or should we stay away from a plug and play mouse?

I use a Dell Optical (USB) Mouse whenever I Am Docked to my D-Port and Notebook Stand, along with a Dell (USB) Keyboard. There should be no reason not to, at least you now have the tool to use if the Mouse Driver 'gets' the TouchPad again.

If the conflict were un-resolveable, I would create two Hardware Profiles and use Device Manager to Disable the Mouse Driver in the Profile for the Touchpad. (That would strictly be a idea "Off the top of my head", check for a better way for sure, as I have never had a need to do it that way.)

As far as I know, it is enough to just reinstall the Synaptics Driver after the Mouse Driver is installed, and then use both or at least one or the other.

Well, that didn't solve the problem either, at least not for long. So, VISA in hand I called Dell Support. The technician suggested disabling the pointer stick (duh, what's that I asked!) and if that still doesn't solve the problem, disable the touchpad and always use a mouse. He told me that this is a common problem that occurs with these notebooks because constant use of the palmrest puts pressure on the pointer stick (I think I got that right...it got worn out!). So I disabled the pointer stick and so far so good. Now if this still doesn't solve the problem I'll let you know! BTW, no charge for the call even though the Latitude is way out of warranty!
