I personally don't care about a 17" screen, as long as it's resolution is not higher than that of a 15.4" screen.  If the resolution on it was the same as that on a 15.4" screen, I would still not get it because it would make the laptop heavier.  If a 17" would come out with a resolution higher than 1920x1200, then I would seriously consider it.  But I have yet to see any 17" screen on the current laptops that does this.

If you don't mind the weight; 17" notebooks are really nice!

I would live a 17" laptop (well more of a dsek-note). It wold be nice as a something to take from my desk at home to my desk at work (once I start my businsess that is).

But I would like it to be powerfull and loaded:
* P4 HT processor
* 800 MHz FSB
* DDR 400
* Two bay (DVD-CD/RW & and Media bay)
* media card Reader
* 4 USBs
* the regualr goodies (internal wireless, card slot, bluetooth)

Well, if you are not going to be moving it to a lot of locations, you might as well just get a docking station and buy a nice 19" or 21" monitor.

I think you just described the Toshiba Satellite P25 (or at least the P20 - in Canada).

17" widescreen notebooks are kinda cool - you get screen width similar to 18/19" desktop 5:4 displays in a reasonably portable package. Unfortunately current 17" widescreens displays run at 1440x900 which isn't really that great. If/when a WUXGA widescreen notebook appears then I'll start getting jealous. There are various specs for a new clevo clone notebook with a WUXGA panel from the likes of Sager and Eurcom, but I for one think the specs are wrong - Philips make the current 17" widescreen panel and they are introducing a new WSXGA+ (1680x1050) but they have not announced a full WUXGA panel yet. It will come eventually and it will be sweet when it does - I love my 15.4" WUXGA but I have to admit it's not ideal in all situations.

I noticed an Acer with 17" display (4:3 aspect ratio). It was only SXGA (1280x1024) but the physical size of the display was magnificent. As a whole the machine was not one bit too large. It could be oversized for a teenager, but for an adult it's not a big box. I'd definately carry such a machine with me.

Because of the large size the keyboard was of reasonable size and had a full size separate numeric keypad, something which I've been missing on many laptops. Of course there's a negative side to this, that the keyboard is not centered on the screen because of the numeric keypad.

I'd definately buy a 17" machine if one was available with a 2048x1536 (normal 4:3 aspect ratio) screen. Well, I wouldn't spit on a widescreen either :-) But really, I do not expect to buy any new laptops before I can get them in 17". Unfortunately 17" may be the largest size display we're going to see on laptops until some kind of foldable or head mount displays come to the market.
