Insp. 8000 Are the batteries going or something else

Question

I got my 8000 in spring of 2001 and still have and use the 2 batteries that I got with it. Lately I've noticed it doesn't stay charged as long as it used to, and I figured it was because they were getting old and well I had it plugged in more often then should have, especially when working on school work. But one thing I noticed recently was that with both batteries in it showed a certain percentage, and right after checking, I pulled one out checked the light indicator on it, and put it back in, when it saw the second battery again, it showed it's level as dramatically lower(like almost 20% points lower) than it had been not 5 minutes before. Does this still sound just an old battery issue or is it something else. I don't use the laptop as much as I used to, it mostly for when I travel now, so I don't want to invest a small fortune in it at this time, so any small inexpensive suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If the batteries came with the system, they have served you well and are simply wearing out.

Yeah they are. Got both when I got the laptop. Ok Thanks, I wanted to double check.
