I think that the 1680x1050 resolution is perfect for the 15.4" widescreen.  I've used the 1920x1200 and it's too small.  With 1920x1200, you'll probably end up using extra-large fonts and running games at non-native resolution, which pretty much defeats the purpose of having an ultra-high-res display.

I don't know about response times.  I have the Samsung LCD on my 8600 and it's incredible.  I've never noticed any bluring or smearing.  I'll bet the response time is at least 25ms.  I wouldn't even be suprised if it's 16ms.

I haven't heard about any new Inspiron models, but it's a good bet that Dell will come out with a notebook that supports the Dothan CPU when it's released on February 4, 2004.

I'm not sure what you mean by 7.2 HD version.  What does HD stand for here?

hi again

with you mentioning the Samsung display, i've heard of 4 manucatureres now. They seem to put in either Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung or Toshiba display. Is there a way that I as a customer can tell them what one I want ? I really don't want to end up with an Hitachi display and slow response time hehe :))

So if I get it right you bought the WSXGA and not the WUXGA right ? I tend to buy WSXGA too as I think it's way enough on a 15" screen.

How were you able to tell what kind of monitor you have?  Were you able to do it through windows, or did you open it up?

Hi folks

I need a new notebook which I will use for gaming also.  I came across the two models I mentioned above and have a few questions on the Dell Inspiron 8600 since there is no shop where I can walk in and test it. A friend of mine has the Satellite 5200-902 and the display is really amazing !! Well hope you people can help me with a few answers here

1. Display Response Time: I do not find any infos on the response time for the Inspiron 8600. I know the Toshiba has around 25ms and that's really good. 128MB graphics memory and stuff will not help if the response is bad. So this is REALLY important as I will be gaming alot and also I seriously hate it when scrolling a web page all the text is blurred.

2. Display Resolution: Should I go WSXGA or WUXGA ? Again there is no way I can "test" it before I buy so I really need to know in advance. What happens if I buy WUXGA (1920x1200) and then in Windows setting change the resolution to 1680x1050 ? Will I still see things clear or will everything be meesed up ?

3. Graphics: On the US website you can order the Inspiron with ATI I think. You can't do so in europe, there is only the geForce atm. Now how important is this ? Should I wait for an ATI version to come out ?

4. New Inspiron ? : I heard that there will be a new Inspiron coming out in january. I'm not in a hurry with the notebook and I'd hate to buy the thing and see a new model the next day. On the other hand you can wait forever as there will always new stuff be coming out. So does anyone know if it's true ?

5.  HD: I also read somewhere that there is a 7.2 HD version. On the european website all the disks have 4.2 only.

thanks guys

I believe the screen on my 5200 is a Sharp. I love the UXGA. One can always resize the fonts. Whatever the response time is on mine - it's very fast!

The 8600 has the faster graphics card, currently. It would be the better choice, if you don't need the great speakers, front audio controls, line in (for recording from external devices), extra drive bay, SD card slot, build quality and remote control of the 5200.

...and, yes; 7200RPM HDs have been out for a few months now.

There will definately be a wave of new notebooks from all manufacturers in the new year, if you have the patience to wait.

Oh well I think I gonna go Toshiba. I wish I could go Dell as the specs are really nice but I been on the phone with them and I don't like how they behave. Here is my "phone" story with Dell

1. I call them up and ask about response time of display
Answer : No Infos

At that time I didnt know there was an ATI version to come out, I only found out the next day and so I called them again, since on the US Website you can buy the ATI version, but not in europe

2. I call them again and got someone else on the phone this time, so I ask about the response time again and also when ATI version is gonna be available in Europe.
Answer: No Infos on the display response time
Answer: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro will be out in a few days.

Nice !! So after a few days I write them an email and ask for a proposal. I don't need free printer or whatever promo stuff, I'd rather get the base system for lower price. I asked for a proposal for the 8600 with 128MB ATI card. A few hour later a guy (again someone different than the first 2 times) calls me on the phone. He told me that the ATI  MIGHT come out and the fact that it's available in the US doesn't mean it will be in Europe too. I'm like WTF ?!!!?? But it gets even better. He then said that IF it comes out it can be tomorrow or it can be in 4 months. And I'm like WTF again. So I told him that I KNOW it will come and I wanted him to lower the price for the GeForce version and he could also keep the "gifts" as free printer and such...all I want is to pay a lower price, since I'm about to buy a system that will have an old graphics accelerator tomorrow :P (or in 4 months if it's him)

Well the guy wouldn't lower the price and so I hung up.

Seriously what kind of customer service is this ? It's a freaking online shop system you can't go TEST the thing so at least they should provide you with ALL the infos you want. How hard can it be to write display response time in the specs ? How can one guy tell me the ATI will be out in a few days and the next guy tells me it could be in 4 months if ever ??

I had a DELL before and you have to say that they have cheap prices at least, that's the one good thing and that's why I came back to buy my new notebook here, but I'm really not sure anymore now. I don't like it if people are trying to ripp me off or take me for a fool.

If I buy the Toshiba 5200 (and it's cheap now, since they dont produce it anymore I think) I can at least TEST the thing and I do know what components are inside. I know the response time too. Only thing is I will have no ATI and I will have less RAM but well I'm starting to think it's worth it.

Doesn't it come with 512? Anyway, RAM is easily upgradeable. FWIW: my 5200 has been 101% reliable for over 13 months. I've used it on battery at least 2 hours every day and I can still squeeze 3 hours out of it. It's an awesome machine. I can live without the latest graphics GPU (although it would be nice to have it ) I continue to be impressed by all of the great features of this notebook. At least, hearing it from me; you know it's not just heresay - I've actually owned this notebook for over a year (and I've owned 4 or 5 Dell's for comparison).  I hope you're happy with whatever decision you make.

hey thanks to both of you :)

i'll let you know what i bought.

(it's still weird that they would let a customer open the box to help another customer instead of just answering on the phone:P)

debian75,

I think you can get a better price from Dell (Belgium in my case). I'll explain you how (I was a small business -- not a home consumer) When it was the time to buy my Inspiron 4150, I phoned Dell and get a ~10% rebate (EUR 2500 to 2250). I told them it was not enough. 2-3 weeks later, I called them back, and said that I already bought another laptop, but we need another one. Guess what?, after 2 or 3 days of negociation, we got it for EUR 2000, and free shipping, more than a 20% rebate. The computer was shipped 2 days after we ordered it, while it wasn't yet paid.

It''s out in Sweden now so it should be available for your country soon too. I would definitely go for the ATI-card, I have the GeforceFX which is OK but ATI gives you more cream!

Yes, as of today the ATI is available in Switzerland too. Unfortunatelly I forgot the name of the Dell guy I was on the phone with yesterday. That retard tried to fool me, he said he doesn't know anything about the ATI coming out soon. RIGHT !

Well I called them again today and I had a much nicer guy on the phone this time
