You can, for a $10 fee, ask for the media to be included. For now you can also call them and have it shipped out for free, though that will probably change in light of the new charge.

Since most new systems ship with a CD or DVD writer, the other option is to make a WIndows CD and a second CD with your drivers on it from the on-disc utility.

You can make your own XP CD by following the instructions on the link below.

I looked at the steps for creating the Windows CD but there is NO option for Creating a CD within Dell Accessories.

Another question I had was is it possible to blow out all partitions and install windows with a retail copy if one wanted to do so on the Inspiron 6000?  Are there any hidden partitions that are necessary to retain?  On some of the users Optiplex and Dimension desktops we have at our office we've created images that have a standard software build.  But I seem to recall that there was a small partition that I had to keep otherwise the system didn't want to boot properly.  So what I had to do was delete the OS partition, install XP Pro and the standard software our users need and leave the hidden partiton in tact.  I forgot what that hidden partition contained though.

I'm wondering if the same thing needs to be done with the Inspiron 6000.

My Inspiron 6000 (received today) didn't come with the utility to create a Windows XP restore CD either. Is the only option to order one from Dell?

It would appear so and for a cost of $10!

This question has been put to one of the Dell moderators but he has not yet responded.

Just been reading the link and appears that Dell has a new policy whereby you will be charged $10 to get the XP CD.

Quoting Dell-ChrisM, "The operating system CD maker is no longer shipping on systems invoiced after July 14, 2005. Your option at point of sale is to purchase the operating system CD for $10. After point of sale, contact Dell and request the CD".
