Yes, I have installed the Intel Mobile Chipset Driver version A07 which I got from the Dell website. It unpacks in a directory called: R86238.
I installed it again to be sure.
The laptop recognizes that a SDcard has been inserted. But it doesn't show in Explorer. I've also tried to update the driver in System Management but it doesn't find any updates.
I'm using an SDcard (the one with the extra strip on the left) which worked just fine before I reinstalled the laptop.
The "Secure Digital Storage Device" showes up in my 'Device Manager' under 'Diskstations'. Device status tells me the device won't start: Error code 10.
Can I uninstall the SP2 and run the SDcard driver that I've downloaded from the Dell website?
I also just ran the Windows XP update (R96945.EXE) again but it didn't help either.
I use a 6000 myself which uses the same motherboard as your 9300 and did not have to manually install any specific driver for the SD card reader as the driver was automatically installed from the xp sp2 install.
I can only suggest that you try uninstalling the Secure Digital Storage Device in device manager then rebooting your computer and hope that Windows will re-enumerate the device correctly.
Just to confirm that the device uses the driver from sp2 I have included a picture from my device manager.
Can I suggest that if your copy of XP does not already contain sp2 then you slipstream sp2 into your XP install CD before your reinstall your system.
The easiest method I have used to do the above is to use a small program called AutoStreamer. You will need a full network install of sp2 (i.e. the full 266MB download).
I hope that you didn't have to do that (reinstall XP). I have the same machine and problem with US XP Pro SP2. The SD Card reader built into the Inspiron 9300 sees the card, but XP will not load it. I have seen this posted a LOT on the Internet. I think it is an XP issue, not a Dell issue, but I may be wrong. I have also installed the latest chipset drivers, no use.
I am going to call MS about it. You should have to revert back to SP1 just to get your SD card to work!!!!
Interesting... I looked at my device manager and clicked on driver details for the driver that is failing...
It says the same version as yours. But when I click the "Driver File Details" I see 4 drivers listed and it says the provider is Sonic Solutions. Sounds like they grabbed the device even though it is not a CD Burner... I will try to tell the system NOT to use them for this type of device...
Just to follow up with you. My problem required a new motherboard. Now the SD reader works fine. I hope that you didn't wipe the machine just to find you still had the same problem.
Contact Dell tech support and tell them you want a new motherboard.

There any error messages or exclamation marks in device manager?
Additionally, are you using the correct type of card?

Where you have 1 file, my device manager shows 3 files. Two of which refer to XP sp2 and one which refers to XPclient.
I've uninstalled the SDcard and rebooted, no success.
I've tried to remove the 3 files manually, no success.
Thanks for you help.
I have a second question for which I started a new topic. If you'll be so kind and take a look at that one.
Cheers
