*NOT* taking ownership of this thread

Just some information for you... not that this tells you how to fix things:

Spoolsv.exe (if located in  C:\Windows\System32 for an XP system) is the spooler service and is responsible for handling printing and fax jobs.
However, if located in C:\Windows , it might be the result of malware, such as (but not necessarily)  Backdoor.Ciadoor.B  or WORM_ANTINNY.G

WinLogon.exe (if located in the c:\windows\System32 )  is the Windows NT/XP login manager. It handles the login and logout procedures on your system. This process is an essential part of your OS and should be left alone.
However, if located elsewhere, it might be the result of malware, such as (but not necessarily) W32.Netsky.D

If you installed the windows critical update released on 9 August, under Security Bulletin MS05-039 (Update Q899588), you are already protected from Zotob and its variants.

Thanks for the answer, ky331.  This is a 21-day-old computer with WinXP-SP2 already installed.  The two files mentioned were in C:\Windows\system32 but they became corrupted.  Dell Premier Support (thank you! Already worth its weight in gold) said that improper shutdown (while my system was in the process of crashing:  unplugging my computer, plugging it back in, turning on computer) may have corrupted the files.

The techie walked me through the Dell restore process -- that pesky maneuver where you press [Control][F11] simultaneously the second the Dell logo shows up.  (It took me about 15 attempts to get the timing right.  They really don't want you to do this by accident, do they?)  It only took about 30 minutes, once I succeeded with the key combination, to get a fresh system.

Well, the nice thing is that more current drivers were loaded during the new setup process for a CD-RW (18 mos. old, cannibalized from my XPS r400 -- 1998 vintage) and a new 3.5" floppy drive (bought and installed it myself for $20 -- half what Dell wanted to put it into my system).  I ran NAV's "Live-Update" and innoculated against the current crop of junk, including Zotob.

Now, to restore all my backed-up programs and data.  Glad I learned the backup lesson a long time ago~

glad to hear you were able to fix your system.

the only comment/thought for you (for future reference)... when your system crashed, and you tried to shut it down... did you try pressing AND HOLDING-IN the power button?  --- generally, even when the system freezes completely, if you HOLD the button long enough, the system WILL shut down on its own.

I didn't know that!  Thanks!  --Pat
