I've been studying the same need for a wired network. It seems to be very intuitive within the context of Windows XP.

For a small wired network, the router most often advised for purchase on these forums are the D-Link Di-604
and the Linksys BEFSR41.

Both products can be had for $10-$15 if you catch the right cycle of coupons and rebates at Best Buy. Otherwise, you may need to spend up to twice as much.

if you network just two computers with wire, do you need a router?  if you don't need a router, how do you connect them.  thanks for the windows tip on the networking.

Because you would need a second NIC card in one of the machines and besides, the router solution is the easiest and most dependable.
