I took a snapshot of Add/Remove before reformatting.  The only Dell items are: Reset Tool, Media Experience, Support 3.1, and System Restore.  I thought it might be Media Experience, but again, I don't see this for download anywhere.

Any idea how to get this back?  Really miss it...

Hmmm media experience is for managing media like movies/music.  It wouldn't have anything to do with wireless being on or off/sound and related.

Have you checked that all your drivers are installed?  That'd be my guess as to why they're missing

If you go to the control panel, and select "sounds and audio devices" there is a check box for the volume control for the taskbar.
While in the control panel, look for an item such as Dell Wireless Utility or something like that. There should be a similar check box for the taskbar icon.

I think these are what you are referring to. ??

Thanks for the replies.

1) The taskbar icons are NOT what I'm talking about.  All Dell laptops have on-screen (non-Microsoft / Windows) graphics when you either change the volume (Function F4,5,6) or enable/disable the Wireless card (Function-F2).  Secondly, there is no "Dell" Wireless panel in the Control Panel.

2) All drivers are installed.  There are no exclamation points in the Device Manager.  I mentioned all of the Dell items in the Add/Remove in my first post.  None of these appear to have this feature.

Anyone else?  I can't believe no one else has come across this.  Its really nice to have the indicators.

Midimidi:

You have me stumped. Even to the point of pulling out my 700m and checking. There is no non-windows on-screen (not in taskbar) icon for the volume even when I change the volume. There is such an icon on my 5150. It is a larger slider that opens if I single click on the speaker that is in the taskbar. The only wireless icon on my 700m is the windows icon (small monitor with radio waves) and a white radio beacon which gets a red X through it when you functionF2 the wireless off. But that is also in the taskbar. Sorry I can't help you - it sounds as if we have differing systems or setup. BTW, my 700M is XP Pro. My 5150 is XPHome. I have both machines set up to let Windows manage my wireless settings.

Where on your screen were these icons located (on your 700M before you reformatted)

Have you installed the Dell Notebook System Software?

The 700m was bought about two weeks ago, so this might be a new thing.  It shipped with WinXP Home SP2 - thus the reformat with Pro SP2.

The wireless on-screen indicator was no different from my 8600.  Its a little blue/white radio tower with the wireless "ping" and it shows up with or without an X.  I think it was in the lower-right corner.

The Volume indicator was different from my 8600 however.  Rather than the typical bar that goes from left to right, it was a percentile that showed up in the top right corner.  No graphic - just a number-percentage.

The mute/un-mute was also the same as my 8600 - I think...can't quite remember that one.

Again - these are VERY nice to have, particularly on these small keyboards.

This is a user to user forum. Moderators read these but any help you get will come from searching the forums (always do that first) and then from other users. Dell has their support set up through other channels - chat and live phone help for instance.

Yeah - I saw that AFTER I had installed all the drivers, etc..  Still, I did try installing it, and as far as I can tell, it didn't really add anything.
