How many people have reported this problem to H-E-L-L? (I mean Dell)...
Turning OFF power management is NOT an acceptable solution for a laptop. This is a manufacturer's defect (it came from the factory this way) and DELL refuses to fix the issue. I don't care if it is hardware or software, IT DIDN'T WORK WHEN YOU SOLD IT TO ME.
So, they must compensate people for the defective product either by fixing, replace, or refunding. And sending my new computer to them for 2 months to get fixed is not an acceptable solution. They won't refund because it is past their 20 day period. And I doubt they will willingly replace.
I suggest people file a l-a-w s-u-i-t in their local small claims courts against DELL for selling defective products and fraudulent sales practices. It costs less than $100, you don't need to be a lawyer (or have one) and there is no way DELL will send a lawyer to fight the case, you win by default when they don't show! Just keep the claim at less than $5000. Which is about the right amount when you factor in the cost of the computer, and the value of my time trying to fix the problems. Thoughts???
(Funny commentary, DELL won't let you write h-e-l-l or l-a-w s-u-i-t in a post...talk about freedom of speech.)
actually, it didn't solve the problem completely. it goes standby, but the hard drive light is still on. it should be off completely with only the power light on and off with rhythem. there must be some program preventing it from completely standby. it standby properly once after installed the new VPN client, but after that the hard drive light problem appeared.
I was told by my school IT staff it may be the VPN client causing the problem. I think it's the wireless configuration doesn't work with the standby mode. Because I notice before you log on, you can choose to turnoff/standby, at that point, the WiFi light (next to your power buttom) is not on, then it can standby properly; but once I log in and even before connected to internet, the WiFi light will turn on and the standby problem appeared. I tried to remove PCI bus and the standby worked. so it seems it's the WiFi adapter causing the problem. I know what I'm talking about, but maybe in the right computer terms.
Is there any Dell technician reading this forum? any idea?
I have another friend whose 6000 shuts down whenever he tries to connect to internet...
That's interesting yg398. I know that I do not need the Cisco VPN Client, but perhaps it has been installed by default for me. I will check for that and remove it if possible.
I'm glad that at least one person has been able to get standby/hibernate to work. It's quite sad that Dell cannot offer any solutions here.
Certainly it is true that some hardware/software does not play well with standby/hibernate. But how to figure out which one(s) I guess is the question we all have. Is there a tool you used to figure out the VPN Client was the culprit?
I have applied all the updates everyone has suggested with no luck. I do recall seeing something in the past that logged the messages when Windows tries to invoke standby/hibernate, but do not remember what it is. Maybe I will put some time into searching for this. Hopefully someone else already knows and can put this problem to rest for all of us!
I also do not have the Cisco client and yet have the same issue. I think it is a variety of different porgrams that cause this and Dell/MSFT do not understand twhat causes this in enough detail to actually issue a remedy. That's my take but there may be something available that we have not stumbled upon...a simple fix that Dell support is unaware of...
I see as of Wednesday Sep 14, there is a new video driver update for those that have the ATI X300 video card (which I do). So I will be trying that tonight, and praying for the best!
I have the same problem. I am wondering if it had been fixed. I guess only the laptops in a recent batch are defective. My friend who bought his 6000 two months ago has the same problem.
I have the same exact problem. It occurs about every 1 in 7 times. I bought my Inspiron 6000 in July/August. Has anyone been able to rectify this problem through Dell?
I disabled the wireless from my BIOS. I am using an external wireless card . I haven't had the problem for 2 weeks. I think it could be the 2200 bg wireless card which is causing the problem.
I know there is no use in trying Dell support. They always say that their drivers are tested properly and there is no problem. I am trying revert to the BIOS version A06. Lets see what happens.
OK. Thanks everyone for the tips about wireless and bluetooth. I see Dell has driver updates for both of those as of the end of last month. My currently installed drivers were about a year ago, so I've downloaded and installed both of the new drivers.
I'll see what happens tonight and I hope to post a *success* message tomorrow.
p.s. - I also disabled the bluetooth driver (after updating it) because we don't currently need it, so maybe that will help as well.

I've got the Intel 2915 wireless card (same family as the 2200), and the Dell 350 Bluetooth option built-in. Maybe we're finally on to something.
