Hi,

You dont say what model, but if it wont push back on replace the keyboard . Often when keys come off, the tabs that hold them in place are damaged and it will keep happening.

Hi,

Some people have bought a dead one from Ebay for that reason. Given the cost of a new one and freight, I would go for a new one.

Is there anywhere that supplies the small plastic tabs that attach to the keys - I have one broken & its seems crazy to have to replace the whole keyboard

I recently purchased the Inspiron 9300 a few months ago.  Is it necessary to by a whole new keyboard?

If required, how much do they cost?  Are the easy to install?

Thanks Rollie, but unfortunately the problem is with the scissor hinge itself - the small plastic pins that locate the scissor hinge onto the metal base of the keyboard have sheared off, there is no way of attaching it to the base !

For the sake of two plastic pins, replcement of the whole keyboard seems an expensive way forward.

Really appreciate you coming back on this one though

All,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Please shake the keycap and see if ther is an x-shaped plastic assembly hanging below keycap. If it is there  the re-assembly is as follows. Carefully note the position of the assembly relative to the letter marked on the upper LH corner of the keycap. You must remove the plastic assembly (it is called a scissor hinge) from the key top cap. If you look carefully at it, you will see how it snaps into the key top cap. Once it is off, slip each of the four legs of the scissor hinge underneath the appropriate loops on the key assembly on the keyboard. Keep the same relative alignment with respect to the keycap letter. When this is done correctly, the scissor hinge will stand up straight just waiting for the key top cap. Carefully line up the keycap with the letter in the correct position and push it firmly down onto the key. It should snap into place.

Agree with Andi.  The instructions for reassembly are  great but the scissors hinge no longer has the pins to attach to the metal structure on the key board.

Can you purchase replacement keys or the scissor hinge?

Hi, I have the same problem, the "c" just popped off easily and now it won't go back on.  After careful inspection I can see the one side of the x configuration plastic seesaw device that attaches it is broken.  It's a very fragile piece of plastic holding those keys on.  I sure hope they can just replace the key.

We have an extended warranty, would that be covered??

I've managed to buy a new 'swedish' keyboard on ebay for €12.50, so it'll just be a case of swapping out the keyboard & replacing the swedish keys with the UK/US ones.

At least this way it will give me an ample supply of scissor hinges.

Dell Ireland wanted €80 for a new keyboard !!!

Hey y'all, guess what, if you are under a warranty then you are covered!  I actually had a guy come to my house and replace the whole keyboard at no charge!  however, I asked him if I could keep the keyboard in case another key breaks and he said no.  He said they typically break when you pull them off.
