Unfortunately, it's likely the system board. If the system is out of warranty, the part costs $500+.

It may be better to sell the system for scrap and replace it.

Hey

Thanks, but thats kind of drastic.  The Dell tech My friend spoke to mentioned something about replacing the jack the power adapter plugs in to on the lap top.  Do you know by any chance the part number that would be?

Thabks again

You can replace only the adapter - if the jack is damaged, unless a SMT repair shop can resolder it, the only solution is a replacement system board.

I would try and repair (soldering) the jack on the motherboard if
that is the problem, before I spend big bucks replacing the motherboard.  Yes, it is a double-sided SMT board, however, the plug-in jacks for external devices, including the power jack is large enough to carefully repair.  You will need the right tools for this.  I had good luck repairing a $200 furnace control board that had a fried relay using a fine soldering iron and a solder su_ker.
If your only other alternative is to replace the board, I would encourage you to try and repair it.

I was able to find the power jack for the mobo try: http://www.laptopjacks.com/
You may not need a power jack, just heat up or resolder the power jack contacts. There are 5 that are important.
If you disassemble the laptop yourself I recommend taking pictures :)
