I think the mod locking the last thread was inappropriate. When threads are no longer useful or it becomes a flame war it's one thing, but we're literally just continuing where we left off in the last one. I think people are just going to get more lost or not realize the last thread was there than anything else. Hope they're not trying to now push this problem under the rug. Can we request that the last thread be reopened since it really made no sense to close it?
maybe we could ask the moderator to kindly post a link on the old thread to this thread, to make it easier for people that find the forum as a result on google.
I agree. This is more of Dell trying to avoid the issue. I just got my gen 1 xps back from the depot for the 3rd time and I've got my highest 3dmark score yet: 2515
Towards the end of the benchmark the system was throttling down to 2900mHz. I have the rightmark cpu utility running at all times to monitor the cpu throttling.
I'll keep an eye on the throttle and see if it gets any lower. If it does I'll be asking for a replacement!!!!!
I wish we could place a link to this thread from the old one.
Here is the update. (
kevon / jmh711 pls check your PM inbox) & Dell tech came yesterday and replace the CPU for the third time, but this time with the Northwood. When the machine started up (any way it didn't start at the first time, he has to remove the case again and fix something.) As soon as it started, I ran the 3DMark05. Even though I didn't see any throttling (the room temperature was 20 C - very cold and the CPU was on a fresh thick layer of thermal grease), it only scored 1655.
I left the machine on and after an hour I started the ‘Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords’ game. I set the players, half way through the loading of a new game the system shut down, and it never came back! When I press the power button the screen flashes once, all three lights besides the power button come and stay for few seconds and go away. That’s it. It looks like the system has died unable to bear the torture.
I called and emailed the Dell senior tech person whom I dealt with so far resolving this issue. Today, I just got a call from Dell with the good news. He said that Dell is going to send me a replacement but it will be a 'like to like'. What's that mean. If I get another XPS with a Prescott I will be back again into this vicious cycle. O' boy!
When Dell sent me a Northwood processor I put it in myself and everything worked perfectly. I am guessing that the technician messed something up when they had your laptop apart.
If you are getting an iXPS replaced then they will either give you a replacemnt iXPS they have in stock or an iXPS gen2 if they do not have an equivalent iXPS in stock. Chances are that you will get a gen2.
What it means to get a 'like to like' replacement should be the same for you as it was for me. I was told the same thing, however I was given the following details.
The XPS Gen 1 is/was out of production and so I was told I would be receiving the XPS Gen 2 for a replacement. I was happy. I was also told that it was an upgrade and they could assure me I would be very happy when it came, but that it would have the same specs that I had with the gen 1. OK, I was very cool with that. I interpretted that to mean that if you had a gig a ram, you were going to get just that in the new gen 2. If you had a 256 vid card that that's what you were going to get with the new gen 2 replacement.
To my surprise, I received the gen 2 with 1 gig more than the 1 gig I had in the gen 1. It had a Pentium M processor, instead of the 3.4 gh I had in the gen 1. While I was surprised and thrilled, it was a small price for Dell to pay for putting me through what they did. The battle even continued after that when they refused to send me a backup of the preinstalled programs that came with the replacement. The reason I needed them was because every preinstalled program was corrupt due to a incomplete or corrupt installation and the laptop needed to be reformatted the first day I had it. I cursed more than I ever would to any company that I've done business with and chose to end my relationship with Dell and never fight another battle with them again.
I am extremely happy with the replacement and could care less about Dell's petty excuses as to why they cannot and will not send me backup's for the preinstalled programs.
I hope you too will finally be satisfied once you receive your replacement.
I got an email confirmation from Dell today saying that the system exchange has been authorized and they will be sending the new XPS (Pentium M). According to them, it will take approx. 2 to 3 weeks to arrive.
Finally, I am happy, and it is worth going through the pain. Thanks for all your contribution in this forum.
I have been having this problem now for over 6 months. My computer just heats up and all my games lag, heck even IE and Firefox will take a long time to open. I just havent had time to call Dell and sit through the call.
I am wondering if its a design issue. Because the video card gets extremly hot but there is no fan by it. Lst night i put my XPS down for a sec and it shut off by itself because it got too hot. I cant even launch the FN+Z+R when booting up. I will be calling tonight to see if i can resolve it with them.
Though the video card does create a lot of heat, and shares a common fan with the CPU, I was having throttling issues even in apps like Visual Studio .NET when compiling projects, and my GPU wasn't hot at all.
1) Dell finally agreed to send me a replacement XPS!
The Questions:
1) Does this mean that on Sat. (today) that they higher ups agreed to the replacement?
2) They agreed to the replacement today on Sat. and we went through all the steps and he said that was that. Now Because its Sat. is their still a chance that on Mon. when most of the higher ups come back to work and see a requet for replacement is their still a chance they could then cancel the request?
3) Is their a possiblity that i could get a faulty Gen 1 again?
4) its been 15 minutes and i still haven't got a confimation e-mail yet. I know this may sound like im impatiant but usuallyl by the time i get off the phone and check my e-mail they usually have sent me a e-mail in a matter of 2 minutes.
5) if i recieve no confirmation e-mail by tonight would i be safe to assume my replacement will probably be accepeted or denyed mon. when all the higher level exec. come in?
Thanks, gls
P.S. Otherwise im very excited about the prospect of getting a replacement laptop. And the first thing im ordering after i get it is a go 7800 card!
I am glad I finally found this thread because this problem has been causing me a lot of headaches. The fans are 80% of the time blasting full speed and the system keeps on slowing down. If the computer goes into standby and then is started up again, even if it is cold, the fans are at 100% and the system is so slow that it takes sometimes several minutes to open up internet explorer. I have tried everything, from complete reinstall of the entire computer to keeping it dust free, and nothing have helped. Thanks to this forum I know now that it wasn't only me an I hope this issue can be resolved. I mean, if you pay $2000+ for a system it better work, especially if it is less than a year old.

Anyone has the extension for the XPS support?

BTW, you do Fn-Z-R when in Windows, not on boot.
