Have you tried downloading RM CPU clock utility? That should be your first check to see if the CPU is throttling. If it is throttling, call dell support (is your warranty hasn't expired) to get your CPU replaced. If it is expired, purchase a Northwood CPU (socket 478).
I've now had my laptop back from the depot for two weeks. Yes, it's the 3rd time it's been there but the finaly replaced the cpu. I'm sad to report that the cpu does in fact throttle down to 2400 when I play World of Warcraft or the F.E.A.R. demo.
My cpu should be at 3.4. That's nearly a loss of a Gig. It has been much better than when it throttled down to 400mhz, but I'm affraid it will some day start to throttle back down lower and lower.
I realy hate having to call dell tech support again. All I ever get is run arounds. And I'll have to loose my computer another week at the depot. Sigh.
What should I do? Wait untill it starts throttling more or get it over with sooner?
I should have gotten an Alienware. They at least have good tech suport.
Yeah, I have checked it with the RM CPU utility, and it goes from ThrClk: 3391.25 MHz to around 2000 with even minor strains. Warranty is still up so that shouldn't be a problem, have contacted them and waiting for an answer
Just an add, the lower value was when the computer was acting kinda normal, I fear to find out how far it goes down when the computer is acting up and fans are blasting for full horses :)
Contacted support and they told me to call the XPS line, will do that, and see what happens. Right now the ThrClk: is 444.77 MHz and will most likely remain that way until it crashes or I reboot. Wonder why this keep on happening and why they keep on releasing products that you can't upgrade and that grow old in no time. Next time its a desktop, and it sure as heck won't be a Dell :)
Don't wait. Just call them back and tell them that it's still throttling. Mine still fell to 2000 the final time I called. It amazing that even after having all of the major components replaced in the laptop, it still occurs. Just goes to show what a poor design the XPS Gen 1 really was.
Anyway, this last phone call should be your last and I would be very surprised if a replacement wasn't processed. Good luck and keep us posted.
It's not a design flaw. The design is actually quite good. It's the fact that it was never designed with a *Prescott* processor in mind. The Prescott processor is obviously not compatible with this design, and Dell refuses to accept this fact. As soon as I swapped my Prescott out with my desktop for it's Northwood, both systems seem to be running smoothly, and in fact even better than with their original processor configuration. The Prescott likes the desktop case better, and the Northwood likes the laptop case better. I've actually even had both overclocked for over a month now with no ill effects and *zero* throttling.
Well, i just found out that they dont want to replace my Prescott processor. The Dell tech told me that since they shipped it with a Prescott they cannot change it to a Northwood, any tricks on telling the underpayed clown at techsupport that i need a Northwood?
They have been refusing to do the switch for a while so I don't think you can convince them. You need to let them try to fix the laptop their way and when they cannot then they should send you a replacement system and it will likely turn out to be the latest version of the iXPS now called M170. Good luck!
Feels like that is what will happen. After being on the phone with the tech guy, and being told to restart, shut down stuff, and other nonsense, I was told to try it out and then contact them again, which is needless to say I already did. I told them that the processor was throttling, and he acted like he had no idea what I was talking about. So we will see what happens, it seems like a replacement processor is out of the question, so we have to do this the hard way then...*sigh* I am so glad I payed for all this helpful support
