I have the same problem.  2 hours on the phone with Dell tech support and no solution... I will let you know if I find anything!

Thanks for the reply.  I think we are going to have to wait until the manufacturer comes out with a new driver.  Dell support is of no help at all.

I also have this problem, coming out of standby (but not rebooting). What kind of touchpad and which version of the drivers do you have (look in Device Manager to find out)? Mine: Inspiron 5160, Synaptics touchpad, drivers ver. 8.0.14. Might be worth writing the manufacturer, too, at support@synaptics.com.

Problem solved: I downloaded and installed the WinXP driver from http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm, which is ver. 8.1.2. Synaptics warns that these generic drivers may be missing features because they customize touchpads to manufacturers' specs, but this one has all the features of the Dell driver it replaces. The advanced settings are a little difficult to find: click the Device Settings tab, highlight your touchpad in the list, and double-click or click on the Settings button. My custom settings did not change when I suspended/ powered back up, and when I rebooted.

Try the driver described in my previous post. I forgot to mention that I uninstalled the Dell driver before installing the Synaptics one. I also deleted the registry key the dell Driver left behind at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics before installing the Synaptics driver. Be sure to back this key up by exporting it to a .reg file before doing so.

I have an annoying problem with the touch pad on my I6000 not remembering my settings after I reboot or come out of hybernation or standby (assuming I am able to come out of standby...which is hardly ever, but then that is another problem)

Do you have a stick in the middle of your keyboard, or just the touchpad alone? The drivers page for the 6000 shows your model as having the Alps touchpad/stick. I would think that this is the same device as in my Latitude CPx J, and I have never had a problem with it. I noticed, though, that the driver page for the 6000 has what looks like a later version of the same driver as shown on the CPx J page. Other than trying the earlier driver, I don't know what to suggest. But if in fact you have a Synaptics pad, see my previous articles.

Works great! I tried that site before, but missed that XP driver... tried to install the 64 bit one. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the info.   However, I tried the updated driver on my Inspiron 6000 but it actually became even worse.  Even at the maximum setting, I had to slide my finger from one side of the touch pad to the other 32 times just to get the cursor to move from the right side of the screen to the left side.

One full slide on the touch pad made the cursor move only 1/4 to 1/2 inch each time.  I had to restore back to before the install of the update to get back to where I was before.

I guess the driver is very selective on which machine it will work on.
