li-ion batteries are quirky that way, don't use them enough they die, use them too much, they die, use them on a semi regular basis and the laptop works on batteries just fine. I don't know if the 9100 series has a button to press on the battery itself showing current charge but if yours does and all 5 light up, something is funky with your mainboard.

I've had laptop batteries come back to life with a simple bios upgrade with a new charging algorithm.

take the battery out and reinsert it. Then take your laptop off and let it charge for the night. when you wake up take out the power cord and press your power button and see what happens.

Mine does the same thing.  I have the exact same problem with the Inspiron 9100.  I press the button on the battery and only the 1st, 3rd and 5th light up.  What should I do now?  Please help!
