Download the latest version of HJT(hijackthis) (version 1.99.1) from

http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

you must create a separate folder and place it there.... people commonly use C:\HJT. Note: Please do *NOT* use a TEMP (temporary) folder, *NOR* your DESKTOP, as HJT will be generating log files and backup files in the folder from which it is run... you risk accidentally losing these if you use a TEMP folder, and you will generate extreme clutter if you use your DESKTOP.

The file above comes as a compressed .ZIP file... you have to UNzip it (hopefully, you have an UNzip utility built into your Windows Explorer. If for any reason, you're unable to UNzip it, you can download the already-unzipped .EXE file from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HijackThis.exe )

After Unzipping, double click on HiJackThis.EXE

Click on Do a System Scan and Save a LogFile

This will automatically open NotePad

Copy the entire file from NotePad: EDIT/SelectAll, EDIT/Copy

Then REPLY to this thread, and PASTE the results here.

Hopefully, one of the HJT experts will get to it as quickly as possible.

WARNING: HiJack This is a VERY POWERFUL tool. Do *NOT* do anything else (in particular, do NOT use it to delete any entries) until you are advised to do so!! Improper use of this tool can severely damage your system.

Supplemental note: The procedure as worded above has been carefully edited over time, so as to expedite the process of helping people. Nevertheless, it seems that many individuals try to be "creative", and make some variations. It really would be to your benefit if you follow these directions EXACTLY as stated... because certain changes on your part can result in slowing-down the help process.

Specifically, the following are 3 very common BAD deviations which will cause delays:

a) BAD: using an older/outdated version of HiJackThis...

The experts only work with the current version. So if you make a post with an older version, you'll simply be advised to get the latest version, re-run it, and re-post your log.

b) BAD: using a TEMP directory or your DESKTOP for HJT....

Some experts may insist you move HJT before they'll begin working with you. Others will start the repair process, advising you to move HJT as one of the very first steps. Failure to do so can result in losing potentially critical information. So please, just use the suggested C:\HJT directory, rather than try to be creative.

c) BAD: posting your log in the wrong forum...

if you post your log back iin any other forum, it will "sit idly", either until the forum moderator gets around to move it for you... or until you decide to repost your log... in the HiJackThis forum.

POST SCRIPT: It has come to my attention that many people are unfamiliar with how to create the recommended sub-directory/folder C:\HJT ;

while others are able to create this directory, but are unsure how to move HJT into it (from wherever it happened to get downloaded into, "by default")...

If you have either of these "problems", then you should d ownload a self-extracting copy of HijackThis from

http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the file hijackthis_sfx.exe file, and it will self-extract into its own folder,

C:\Program Files\HijackThis

I had downloaded hjt in May when I was having an issue with some adware. Will downloading the latest version just overwrite the version on my computer? Or do I need to do something else when downloading the new version? Thanks for the help...

try opening/running the HJT program you already have... the top-line should tell you the version... you might find that you already have 1.99.1... in which case, you just have to generate and post your log.   if you find you have an older version, you should get rid of it... it's basically obsolete... and download the latest version to replace the old one.

First: You're running HJT from a TEMP directory:

C:\DOCUME~1\marian\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 2 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

When you do so, either HJT will not create its log files and backup files; or if it does, you risk losing them when the TEMP's cache is cleared. It's important that you save these backup files, in case you have to "undo" [restore] some of the things you "FIX" incorrectly.

So you need to move HJT into a separate, non-temporary, non-Desktop, directory of its own. We recommend using the directory C:\HJT , so that it will then appear in your log, under running processes, as C:\HJT\HiJackThis.exe

Thanks for looking at this for me. It seemed the only problem I had was that the Symantec Virus notice about the vurtumundo virus, I followed the instructions on the Symantec site, but still couldn't get rid of the virus (adware). After following your instructions, it worked, and I actually do notice an increase in processing speed, so whatever you had me do certainly made the difference. I don't think I have any additional issues, although I did follow your last instructions and I'll post another message with the hjt log. Thanks again for all your help!

hi ky331,   I followed your instructions, but I must have copied the wrong log file, as I followed your instructions again and couldn't find the file.  Here's the latest log.  One note however,  after I rebooted, I got a message from Microsoft Antispyware about a BHO file and that I should allow it.  I didn't allow, I clicked on block.  That BHO file you had me check must be the culprit.  The second time I rebooted I click allow, then ran hjt again, and found the file, checked it again, then rebooted; I again got the message from MS Antispyware about the BHO file and allowing or blocking.  I'll keep blocking each time I reboot as I'm not sure what it is or what it's for. that BHO was part of the Vundo/Virtumundo trojan that we removed. if that line "insists" on coming back... as long as it says " (no file) " , there's really nothing to worry about. this is (at least) the second report of Microsoft Anti-Spyware finding some (non-critical) "remnant" of the file/fix we're been running...

as already mentioned, i have sent out a request to some colleagues, for someone to step-in and consider/analyze the remainder of your log. [at present, i am "specializing" in only certain types of infections, such as Virtumundo]. i'll be keeping an eye on this thread... hopefully, someone will arrive in the next day or two.

Log looks OK. As for the BHO that keeps coming back. I wonder if SpyBot's Teatimer is not causing this. I have had problems with it doing something similar in the past. Why don't you turn it off or just uninstall Spybot for a couple of reboots and then reinstall it? See if that lets the ghost of the BHO go away.

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.

One way to make this more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.
